I'm planning to drive from Salisbury to Sicily next June and would be grateful for any route advice. I want to cover the James Bond twisting route through Switzerland (can't remember the name right now!) and then back through the Mont Blanc tunnel. Anything I should know about / avoid ? I'd be v grateful!! Thanks.

Follow the Mille Miglia route through Tuscany you will encounter some stunning roads/passes. Also if you want, I can give you a few outstanding restaurants in Italy having lived there for 5 years.

Thank you. I'd love to know the names of those restaurants with your inside knowledge!

The A338 at Cholderton is currently closed so you will have to get to the A303 via Amesbury, should be open by June though. biggrin

On my wish list to do a similar drive but earlier around April/May.
Have you got a route sorted?
Not keen on that Amesbury A303 diversion hehe

Once you have entered into Italy via the Mont Blanc drive into Piedmonte.
First recommendation is also great for an overnight so you can enjoy a stunning meal along with some Barolo, Barbaresco or Nebbiola wine. If you have any room in the car go to one of the local Cantinas and stock up.
Ristorante Bel Soggiorno, Cremolino, Piedmonte. Tel 0143 879612

As you drive into Tuscany and prior to getting onto the Mille Miglia roads take a lunch with stunning views (leave plenty of space as it is a 7 course lunch although several of the courses are small starters and its so cheap) at
Ristorante La Brinca, Campo Di Ne, Chiavari. Tel 0185 337480

Before you cross to Sicily overnight in Scilla. This is one of the most incredible places and unspolit. It is where the Tales of Homer, The Odyssey is based and the Siren's of Scilla from the tale are. The views from the restaurant over the straights of Messina are awesome. The restaurant has a terrace over crystal clear waters. Google Earth has many photos.
Ristorante Il Pirate-U Bais, Scilla. Tel 0965 704324. They also have a couple of small hotels.

Any other info you need let me know.

Thank you for those restaurant and other tips. This will certainly help route planning. A 7 course lunch - now you're talking!!! I'd love to take you up on other tips and will do if that's OK with you when we have the route planned.

As for the route...

We haven't sorted out the route finally yet but I'll certainly post it when we have. We're known for our last minute planning!!

I'm driving with a friend. We both have been given permission by our wives which is surprising as in Oct 07 we drove to Fes in Morocco and back in a week and got chased by drug runners through the Rif Monutains, spun the car near Tangiers etc etc.

Aren't mid cises great? You can spin them out for ages!!!

Yep, no problem ask away any questions you may have when nearer the time. Sounds a great trip, not as hairy as the last MLC trip though!
