GranTurismo S Minor Facelift

Extra toys and options for chilled-out Maserati

Maserati’s GranTurismo S will be available soon with a fully automatic option, along with a handful of minor specification upgrades.

Until now, the 433hp, 4.7-litre V8 powered S model has only been available with a ‘robotised’ electro-actuated gearbox. GranTurismo owners wanting the cushy fully-auto option have had to content themselves with the less powerful 4.2 litre engine.

According to Maserati the combination of fully auto transmission – a ZF six-speed – and the bigger ‘S’ model engine stresses the original ‘granturismo’ concept while offering peak performance. Apparently the auto box shares recent modifications with the Quattroporte GT-S installation whereby shifting has been speeded-up and kick-down eliminated from the manual shift mode.

The revised model will be unveiled officially in Geneva next week, with detail changes including new ‘under-door mini-skirts’, new style 20ins alloy wheels with a ‘Trident’ design and an ‘enriched’ equipment package which basically means that you get Bluetooth connectivity and an Ipod interface as standard.

An open-topped version of the GranTurismo is still on the way, but will probably not be revealed until the Geneva show in 2010 according to latest insider reports. Apparently it will be dubbed the GranTurismo ‘Cabriolet’ and not ‘Spider’ as it is expected to retain the coupe’s 2+2 seating – whereas Maserati Spider models historically have room for only two.

Agreed. Great looking car. They also lose money depreciate just like the other Maserati's (quickly) so one day I might afford one!

I have absolutely no desire to own this car, despite its looks and packaging. It is far, far, far too heavy.

The new Jag XJR (5 litre, 500 bhp) undercuts it on price.

An awesome looking car. I was lucky enough to have a demo in one and the sound of the exhaust is unbelievable. I prefer the manual rather than the auto option, but it again gives Maserati another way in to the BMW,Mercedes top of the range market.

Considering even a standard Quattroporte is faster around the Evo track than an M5, whats your problem with its weight?

No it isnt, its a big GT car. It weighs little more than a CL55, M6, DBS and far less than Continental GT. Its not a sports car.

It weighs 170kg more than an M6 and 190kg more than a DBS. It is a lardy lump.

Erm 95kg more than an M6 actually. 50kg heavier than your M5 so i assume you never have passengers to avoid making it a lardy lump yourself.

M6 1710kg, GT 1880kg.

The M5 is a four door saloon, not a GT coupe, and it has rather more power than the Maserati, so I don't see that weight is as much of an issue.
