Story here...
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/news/5125422/M...

I've been pleading for this for years, it's been running successfully for 55 years in Germany, but local GB politicians are sooo up their own behinds that anything "foreign" can't be good. Mind you here in Germany they've only just started building roundabouts, so just as anally retentive!!!

The Article said:
Up until now the Department for Transport discouraged such schemes, increasing motorists' frustration at being met by a succession of red lights.

It was because the Government feared motorists who were travelling smoothly, rather than stopping and starting, would use less fuel and pay less to the Treasury in duty as a result.
Hoist by their own 'green' petard methinks scratchchin

ETA OP, it would probably have been helpful to mention traffic lights in the thread title.

If this is true then this alone should discredit any 'safety' scheme that the scumbags have devised and all such scams schemes should be scrapped forthwith, however I suspect that it will be very much business as normal at nu-labour scam central......

...and the confuzzled little head of many a councillor up and down the country goes into meltdown biggrin

Bus routes, traffic pinch points, lowered speed limits, speed bumps, pedestrianised areas, extra crossings - all designed to make the nasty evil car as unattractive and inconvenient as a bus. The obtuse 'tards that they are.

Now the gubbermint wants them to let traffic flow freely and by inference make car travel faster and more convenient. Can you imagine the consternation?

I love it.

I've heard that traffic lights are to be linked up when driven through at 30mph many times over many years, but I'm not sure that it's as easy to apply as it sounds. the effect on all the interlinking roads has to be considered. I'm sure we all like to hear it said though.

I'd need to see some evidence that the someone was deliberately avoiding doing it in order to increase fuel consumption. That sounds like something so bizarre, only the Telegraph could invent it.

I nearly screamed when I saw this thread heading...

I HATE GREEN!furious

Once upon a time it was sooo simple, it was nothing more than just a 'colour'.

Now green is a bl**dy CULT!

So, after years of being so used to anticipating RED lights they're all gonna stay green longer.

Will I be able to cope with all this new green?
oh dear, the asylum beckons...
arrrrrrrrrgggggggghhhhhhhhhh!yikes

Just a mo, calm down dear... it's just a colour...

and my car is green. coolcool

Green in 'colour' woohoo

You read my mind as I was making my way down the page! I've never seen this anywhere in the UK but here in Germany it is quite common and VERY refreshing to see when it's that time of day. Instead of a pointless red light, the lights on the main road are switched off, and those on the more minor road crossing it are flashing amber.

Having said that, here in Frankfurt I have noticed that traffic lights seem to be red a hell of a lot more than they are green. Over the last few days (I was driving more due to the Easter hols) this has been doing my cranium in: stop, wait. Wait. Wait. Green(mad dash)RED AGAIN!
