Autocar Awards

All the Results

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT – Ford Focus

"There may never be another family car as good as the Focus. Six summers on, it remains the car of choice when it comes to pure dymanic ability. And, even in design terms, it is still a fresh-looking machine both inside and out. For these reasons and more, we salute the Ford Focus".

MOTOR SPORT – ITV/F1 Martin Brundle

"Former F1 driver, Martin Brundle is a first-class professional, taking to TV just as naturally as he did to the track in his racing days".

SAFETY – EuroRAP

It’s a strategy that’s already proving effective. EuroRAP claims that at least 20 lives and 180 serious injuries have been saved in just two years on 13 roads identified as the most improved in Britain".

TECHNOLOGY – Toyota Prius MKII

"Toyota the world’s second largest car maker now views its industry-leading hybrid not only as the thinking man’s cleaner car but also as a test bed for developments it will roll out to the rest of the range later".

DESIGNER OF THE YEAR – Mark Lloyd, Citroen

"To have Citroen win awards for its design is a pleasure – even a relief – after a peiod in which this once crazily innovative company turned more conservative than your average bank.

The latest creation the C-Airlounge, has been led by Briton, Mark Lloyd who for the past five years has been manager of the company’s advanced design studio".

DRIVER OF THE YEAR – Mark Webber

"If there is to be a threat to the established F1 order, look no further than this personable young driver. Webber finished 10th in the championships, with four sevenths and three sixths".

ADVERTISING CAMPAIGN – Honda Accord – Cog

"Forget the fact that it’s trying to sell you a new car, the Cog commercial advertising the new Honda Accord, is a breathtaking piece of film pure and simple".

PERFORMANCE CAR OF THE YEAR – Ferrari 360 Challenge Stradale

"The first Autocar Performance Car of the Year is also the most exciting car we’ve driven in years and the best driver’s Ferrari since the F40".

BEST HANDLING CAR

"The Mazda MX-5 offers as much pleasure as a Porsche 911 GT3 regardless of how fast you drive it".

IDEA OF THE YEAR – AA VixEN

"Car engines in 2003 are run by complex computers that require specialist software programmes to identify problems. The AA has developed a mobile system allowing problems to be diagnosed on the roadside, information is downloaded via Bluetooth wireless networking".

CONCEPT CAR OF THE YEAR – Citroen C-Airlounge

"The C-Airlounge itself will not see production, but plenty of its clever, fresh ideas will. This concept signals a colourful future for one of Europe’s most historic marques".

MAN OF THE YEAR- Louis Schweitzer, CEO Renault Cars

Responsible for rescuing the beleaguered Japanese car giant Nissan. In the space of five years Nissan has become a lean, stable, highly profitable fighting unit, with a whole retinue of enticing products in the showroom or in the pipeline. Meanwhile Renault has been forging ahead in a bid to become known for injecting challenging design into the mainstream market.

I think PH readers could come up with a better load of winners. Seems very bias towards the French!

gurgh... in a year flooded with great concepts, they picked the airlounge, a damn minivan?! sorry, but it isn't even close to revolutionary or significant. I rememeber reading about some vortex generators on the roof...c'mon now, is this really going to show up on a civic? Honda HSC has got my vote, at least off the top of my head. Even the Toyota PM! As a concept only , of course....

I just bought it, can't say I agree with most of the awards. The Jag winner for the designs didn't even have proper wheels.

The best bit was awarding a 16 year old boy with some lego as a prize.
What's he want that for? 8 year olds maybe but he probably wanted money for beer & porn - They really don't hava a clue do they?
