Oh God, PLEASE don't let it look so much like an Insignia in the metal. If it does, either the Production Engineers need shooting OR the head of Marketing, who thought that it looks good in black.

Maybe it needs to be in silver or a light colour, like the earlier renderings.

Please, please, please...

It's certainly not an XJ to me, it looks like an XF from the front and a lexus from the back.

RIP Jaguar heritage.

I like the back, not so sure on the front. Doesn't really exude style and grace like the old ones though, it's more of a 'look at me' car. Does this fit with the Jaguar ethos?

So the S-Type was unloved because it was too retro and the forthcoming XJ loses the heritage.

Kinda between a rock and a hard place really, aren't they..?

The front looks like an XF (not a bad thing, but I presume it will cost more than an XF), and the back end does look nice, but it does lose the XJ heritage. I don't know if that's a bad thing or not. I suppose we have to move on, and the new generation of Jags do seem to get good reviews. I wish them well.

Conversely, the Isignia IS a great looking car (apart from, perhaps, the slightly pinched rear end) and we're not expecting it to have the sleek lines of a Jag. It's a great looking car for a volume model but that's what it is - a volume model.

The Jag needs to be really special when it's up against S-class and 7 series. We should be looking at the Jag and going, "Phwoarrr, I want one".

It looks like an XF at the front and it took some time for that to grown on me as a Jag. Hopefully, this will do the same.

I quite like the retro looks of the S-Type though.

As for the Insignia - the rear is a bit awkward looking, but I think it's quite a handsome car from the front. Not sure Jag would like the comparison though - there'll be quite a price differential!

I think its a great/striking looking car. But that said i tend not believe most of the tosh that is printed on the pages of autoexpress!!

As for heritage.....get a grip, times change and so does design. I'd hate for jaguar to remain in the past. The XF and XK are awesome cars and benefit from modern design. The S Type was pap!!

It looks nice and all that (in the no doubt miles away from production pictures), but it certainly lacks the 'huge presence despite being a gentleman's express' feeling the XJ's of old have. But it's autocar, so ... y'know.

I'll remain undecided until I see something from Jag, but it does look a little obvious.

Ugh! Autoexpress strike again. It will look NOTHING like that. For future reference, Autoexpress have a team of skilled photoshoppers who piece together information into what they think the car will look like.

This time they are very very wrong.

These are NOT official pictures. Only one official picture has been released. It is here:

http://www.autocar.co.uk/News/NewsArticle/Jaguar-X...

Merci.

I've looked up the definition of scooped. It seems AutoExpress have their own dictionary, where it means "news based on nothing but conjecture in a hope we'll have guessed it right one day"

Jag has also confirmed that the new car will be launched in both short and long wheelbase versions powered by the new range of petrol and diesel engines recently introduced in the XF saloon.

This includes the 503bhp supercharged V8, although it won't be an XJR. Company insiders have admitted that a hot XJ is still being planned and will be launched later.
yikes The "hot" XJ will have more power than what is currenty coming from the V8 5.0 SC! So will that be a bigger engine, more cylinders, or an even more supercharged 5.0?

LEXUS GS anyone?

The Jag XJ has to have/be :

4-Doors, big boot (golf clubs), front engined (with room for V8),
conservative, have wood-trim, automatic box, optional 20" drug-dealer spec alloys.

That doesnt leave the designers alot of room to be creative does it?

Also limited budget so must of put XF blueprints through photocopier at 125%. Surely that joke has been done before?

So after years of modifying the XJ's appearance so subtly that only an avid Jag fan could tell the difference they've now decided to completely abandon the car that many people think of when they think of Jaguar.

Why not a modern design with some tasteful subtle nods to the past rather than what looks to be an in yer face extended XF? This is a poor attempt by Jag standards.

ETA: all of what I've said assumes the story is accurate.

I think I saw three of the disguised ones heading northbound up the A1 in Northumberland last friday. Looked awesome in a stealth mode, knight rider, airwolf kinda way.
