[quote+ananova]£3m grant aids new Nissan car production

The Government has announced a £3.26 million grant to assist production of a new Nissan car in the UK.

The aid is part of a £95 million investment by the Japanese motor giant in the new Micra cabriolet, which will be built at its plant in Sunderland next year.

The Department of Trade and Industry said more than 250 jobs will be safeguarded by the grant.

Industry minister Jacqui Smith said: "I am delighted that Nissan has chosen to build the car in Britain and that its other UK-based facilities have been so central to the development of the new cabriolet.

"The assistance demonstrates the Government's commitment to high skilled, high value manufacturing, which is exactly where the UK needs to focus in order to stay ahead in the global market."

Nissan said the new car, which will go on sale in 2005, will be its first European-built coupe cabriolet.

Mario Canavesi, senior vice president of Nissan Europe, said: "It will retain the best elements of the existing Micra and will also offer the pleasure of open top motoring combined with the security and practicality of an all-weather hard top folding roof."

Initial production forecasts have been set at 20,000 cars a year. A dedicated team of 250 people will build the new model as well as employees from the existing 4,500 workforce at Sunderland.

Colin Dodge, managing director of Nissan UK said the Government support had made the project possible, adding: "It is now up to our designers, engineers and production staff in collaboration with our suppliers to successfully bring the product to the market."[/quote]
