Warranty is good news for fans of fast Porsches

Porsche warranties are notoriously easy to invalidate - rumours have even reached the ears of PH that even some paint guards can invalidate parts of the factory warranty - so Porsche tuner Techart has launched an AA-backed warranty for tuned Porsches.

"Even very small modifications have been known to lead to warranty claims being rejected, or extended warranties being unavailable," said Phil Hindley, managing director of Tech9, the UK agent for Techart products. "Techart creates some of the world's finest bespoke vehicles, so it is essential that we support our customers with equally superb service and support however much - or how little - their car has been upgraded."

Though the unlimited mileage warranty has been conceived to cover Techart-tuned Porsches, any modified Porsche over two years old could be covered. "We'll inspect the car, provide a report on the quality of the conversion, and issue the warranty if it meets appropriate standards," said Hindley.

For a 911 or Cayenne, the Tech9 warranty will cost you £1295 for a year's cover, While Boxster and Caymans can be covered for £1095, which covers the cost of inspection.

Although cheaper than Porsche's own extended warranties, it's still a lot of cash to part with, so we would go through the small print carefully to find out exactly what's covered.

Still, as well as unlimited mileage, there is up to 60 days of European breakdown cover. A contribution towards hotel and travel expenses is also provided, though we suspect it wouldn't stretch to anything much better than a Hotel Formule 1.

Fair play to them. This is great news for anyone wanting to make their Porker that little bit better. I had to renew my warranty a few months ago and I was told that any modifications to the car, or anything added that wasn't fitted by an OPC would invalidate the Porsche warranty to anything associated with that item. I wanted to fit some braided hoses, but I was told if I did it would void the warranty on anything brake related.

Great idea. I paid well over the odds to get a 993 Targa from an OPC and couldnt have been more dissapointed by a Porsche used car warranty. Most frustrating was the aluminium castings and associated mechanism that controlled the glass roof. Because the OPC couldnt calibrate it properly the mechanism kept braking, but the warranty didnt cover it because the mechanism was classed as 'trim'. Next time, I'd buy privately or from a specialist and add a really good third-party warranty if I felt in-need of cover.

Warranty? sounds like parts insurance to me at £1205 a year.

The issue with the Porsche warranty is that it is reported (on the Porsche section) that it is very watertight. Although in favour of Porsche not the consumer.

If this is anywhere near as comprehensive as a normal Porsche warranty, then I will seriously consider this when my warranty is up for renewal, purely because of the horror stories I've heard about declined warranty claims.

Also will it only cover cars with techart mods, or any modified car which passes their checks?

The current Porsche extended waranty is probably the most unfairly written and applied of any available non OE warranties on the market.

As the saying goes, not worth the paper it is written on.

Voided by the slightest variance from original spec, including wipers or paint protection film, and also by having any service work, including tyres or the aforementioned wipers, done by other than an OPC.

Watertight? Absolutely, but not for the user..................

I can't beleive they'd void a warranty for having tyres fitted elsewhere, other than maybe any claims on the alloy wheels in future?

I think there's a lot of difference across the dealers and some blown up stories. My GT2 warranty went straight on without a hiccup, though it's bog standard admittedly.

The impression I got from the service department was that if you turn up with a car that's always been in network, (sales and servicing) and already on the old warranty, there shouldn't be any issues.

They're just filtering out the ones with unknown history and of course trying to encourage owners to keep in network. As for value, I'm reserving judgement until I get to see what if anything goes wrong this year...

I bought the Techart warranty from Tech 9 and now have peace of mind that the car with all mods is covered.

Fazz, is your exhaust Techart? I'm just interested to know whether they will only warranty a carr with their own modifications fitted, or others too

Vinnie, my exhaust is not Techart, and this warranty covers cars with any mods so long as the car passes the Tech 9 inspection. I understand the Techart warranty has been specifically launched to cover cars that are no longer eligible for extended warranty cover thro' Porsche because of any non oem mods/additions. There is no grey area with the Porsche warranty, it states in the policy booklet that it is not valid for any cars running non oem mods/additions, in order to be accepted the car would first have to be returned to original specification.

Guys just to back up the release above I purchased the Techart Warranty after the OPC wouldn't warrant my car (996 Turbo X50) with the new change of procedures from Porsche. Due to my Techart Exhaust, Induction kit and 1.1 Power Pack (550BHP).
The guys were more than helpful when I dropped in for the initial vehicle check and have again been more than helpful this week as I have had the Alternator replaced under Warranty.
All Costs covered with none of the usual OPC questions and doubts about the modifications.

Well worth the money and Ive already recouped 1/2 of the costs.
