Truckers Renew Fuel Duty Fight

Road Haulage Association says they share the motorist's pain

As the latest AA Fuel Price report confirms UK petrol prices have risen dramatically since the middle of May, in the past four weeks alone hauliers have seen the equivalent of an extra £1,000 per vehicle slapped on to their annual fuel bill, the Road Haulage Association claims.

Will fuel price protests return..?
Will fuel price protests return..?
"On 22 April 2009, the Chancellor in his spring Budget stated that he expected energy prices to come down,' said RHA Head of Communications Kate Gibbs in a press release issued today. “The opposite has happened, adding even more weight to the case of the UK haulage industry to see September’s proposed duty increase of two pence per litre abandoned. If the worst case scenario becomes a reality and we do see a further increase in September it will be the third rise in nine months equating to a tax rise of 12 per cent.

In his Budget statement, the Chancellor stated that the Budget “will build on the strengths of the British economy and its people, speed the recovery, providing jobs and spreading prosperity”.

“The health of the UK road freight industry is key to the recovery of UK plc. The healthier the industry, the more rapidly the economy will recover. Surely the Chancellor realises that the imposition of a fuel duty increase will have a damaging effect on what is an already depleted haulage industry in particular and the future economy of the United Kingdom in general. It will damage UK companies that hauliers work for and it will push up the cost of food, clothing and other essentials for already hard-pressed families.”

Have you ever lived outside the UK? The grass is not necessarily greener on the other side.

My Dad lives in Oz and my Uncle lives in Canada and both certainly give the impression that the grass is greener on the other side.

With our exchange rates am I wrong in thinking that fuel in Australia is roughly 50p per litre?

Why is it so cheap compared to here?

Such a bogus argument from the government... this is another pathetic attempt to try and get more money out of a very tightly oiled ship. Concentrate on other problems!

We all know that the government are unlikely to do any of this for fun or to infuriate or further F*** up the economy. They are likely to be doing this for good reasons.

Now that we know, through one or two recent press articles, that the MP's are not entirely altruistic I have to wonder now what these good reasons might be.

Do they get free fuel cards? Are they sponsored by Rally cycles or Virgin Trains (I believe that Anne Widicombe was at one stage if I heard correctly).

Answers on a postcard.

I think you'll find that Ms Widdicombe is still on the virgin train.

I wrote to my local MP to protest about ever increasing fuel duty. He referred it to the Treasury.

I just read the turgid, predictable, written by a civil servant reply (about 10 mins ago!) from Kitty Usher (yes ..... the one who just resigned due to Capital Gains Tax evasion).

I think my blood pressure has just about come back down to a safe level now.

A barrel of oil is about $71 half what it was when the petrol was crazy last year but, now we are nearly at the same price yet oil only costing half the price. How does that work?

Funny, I did not hear the truck drivers saying that they were £X thousand better off when the fuel price was at a low in the last few months.

Ultimately, we will be taxed one way or another so if we have cheap fuel we will pay another tax instead. Personnally I would like fewer trucks on the road anyway.

C'mon Gordon, call that election, loose and put someone it that will stop taxing the hell out of Motorists. What labour give with one hand, they take away with another!

Acording to the Government Emissions Label on the Qashqai by my desk it will cost £1293 to fuel a 1.6 Qashqai n-Tec for 12000 miles. Thats based on the government required figure of 88p per litre. Base it on £1.00.9 that I payed yesterday for 95 ron Unleaded, your annual fuel bill is 1482.54, £189.54 extra for one year, over three years the average change cycle you will pay £568.62 more than the govt makes me say you will and over 10 years, the ownership term to qualify for Scrappage you will pay £1895.40 more for fuel than government figures say you will.

I thought Brown was supposed to be all about making government honest!

Don't let the door hit you on the way out then.

I think what you really mean to say is that you hate the way this country is run and you're especially not a fan of the current government. That is different to hating this country.

Someone has to pay for the MPs expenses expenses and pensions, after all there is nothing left in the treasury pot.
What about a full blockade of every city , cars ,lorries bikes .You name it. Simply lock up your vehicle and catch the train home, but then we must not break the law, only MPs can do that and get away with it?
Good luck to the truckers.

It's all just so wrong. Wholesale fuel is still very cheap by the standards of its horrific $150 per barrel peak last year, so why are we paying damn near as much per litre as we were then? I know there have been duty increases but where has the rest come from?! It's gone from 82p to 102p in a few months, with no apparent justification! What's going to happen when the recession dies out and the economy recovers? Are we going to see £1.50 per litre? Ffs. We're being robbed, and I wish we'd flaming well do something about it as a unified group.
