Does anyone know what is going on at the drivers republic website? It used to be full of great stuff and updated almost daily, but doesn't seem to have been updated for a while???

Be interesting to hear if anyone has any news...

'Creative differences' apparently. Though jovial on camera I reckon some of those journos can be a bit prima donna-ish behind the scenes.

It's a real shame I thought it was the first really well put together car website and it's potential was massive, and now there's a big opportunity for someone else to come in and offer something similar. I'd love to do something like that myself but I don't have many motor industry connections nor the stomach to put the good few quid it would take to do properly on the line.

The reason the car mags don't have good sites is that they're all stuck in their ways and are scared that a good digital site will mean the end of paper magazines. I thought DR were the first to see the writing on the wall and get the jump on the likes of evo and autocar etc who put together the odd reasonable video but it's intentionally a bit half arsed and designed to promote buying the magazine, so the web developers have one hand tied behind their backs as it were.

They are all mad of course. A great site for Evo would only expand their business and establish them as a first class petrol head brand. They will sell fewer magazines anyway one day, they might as well expand into other areas. I bet the car mags are all breathing a huge sigh of relief that DR didn't work out. Sadly DR would have forced them all to up the ante and the net effect would be a ton of decent car videos online. Now however, the whole thing has been set back a good few years.

I was also hopeful and even ante'd up the money to join the thing. I thought the original idea was the establishment of a community. It seems to me that we have two worlds today, the first being the magazine world with little two way communication or community, and the second being web communities like PH. They never seem to meet. Sad it folded but in the future the attached community will be critical for publications to survive, I believe.

I tried the Skiddmarks website that they referenced in the their Dear John email, but it does not see, to work.

I got an email with this on:

"Unfortunately this is our final newsletter since DR has closed its doors and will no longer be publishing the features and videos that we've become so renowned for.

There has been plenty of speculation across the internet about the reasons why this has occurred, and despite the first impressions that it must have been for financial reasons, nothing could have been further from the truth.

Thanks to the participation of our readers and the generous support of the automotive industry we were in rude health and looking forward to a bumper year, but differences in our vision about future priorities have led to a parting of ways."

Their website is down too...

On one hand..... frown (It's a shame to see their venture didn't pan out - not really surprised TBH)

On ther other hand..... party
Hopefully the contributors will go back to some more mainstream publication mediums - never really gelled with the web-zine thing...

Being a businessman IMHO you don't close a business because people don't get on or share the same vision. Just how different can your visions be....... If the business was looking rosy financially you either get different people, or you sell it.

So, I'd be pretty darn confident it was money related, but that is pure speculation.

I liked the writers, but having signed up early I visited it plenty but thought the site was utter utter cack design wise. And consider DR sponsor our race series and we were actively encouraged to go and post stuff on there I don't think it worked.

maybe its just ahead of its time......

I'm sure we'll hear from the talented writing team again. The biggest shame will be the loss of the associated footage - did everyone see Richard Meadon's in-car ascent of Pikes Peak?
