Drive in Poxgatsfordshire?

Even more new speed limits coming your way.

http://www.thisisoxfordshire.co.uk/news/4519060.Sp...

It would seem that even 50mph is too fast now. Lots more 40 and 30 limits here we come.

THE PROPOSED CHANGES ON LOCAL ROADS ABINGDON AREA:

A4183 Oxford Road (length of Oxford Road north of the A4183/ A34 junction) — consider 60mph to 50mph.

B4017 at Henwood — consider 30mph instead of 40mph.

B4017 at south end of Cumnor — consider 40mph to include the junctions with the slip roads for the A420 Cumnor bypass.

B4015 between Clifton Hampden and Chiselhampton — consider 50mph instead of 60mph.

DIDCOT AREA A4130 Didcot northern perimeter road — consider 50mph instead of 60mph.

B4493 between the A4130 and Foxhall Road — consider 40mph instead of 60mph.

A4074 in Benson area — consider 40mph instead of 50mph limit, and new 50mph limit to extend to the south (to just south of the junction with Benson Lane and Crowmarsh).

B4493 between Harwell and Didcot — consider 40mph instead of 60mph.

A417 east of Harwell to county boundary at Streatley — consider 50mph limit (except through existing villages where current 30mph limits would remain in place).

A338 south of Wantage — consider 50mph limit (with 40mph limit on part of Manor Road).

WANTAGE AREA A338/A420 to 40mph limit at Frilford — consider 50mph instead of 60mph.

A4074 in Shillingford/Warborough area — consider 40mph limit from junction with Henley Road (to Dorchester) to approximately 200m north of the Warborough Road junction (existing 30mph limit to be reduced in length to this latter point).

Amazingly, there are some INCREASES too, although they really are just fiddling with ultra-low limits that should never have been imposed in the first place. In my view, they're a few sops thrown out to show County's "complaiance" with the new advice on speed limit setting:

WALLINGFORD AREA A4130/A4074 vicinity of Crowmarsh roundabout — consider increase to 40mph from 30mph. (brilliant - the road here is wide enough to be a dual carriageway, no housing and no hazards. 40 still way too low)

A338 at East Hanney — consider an increase from 30mph limit to 50mph on length south of the Steventon Road and the junction with Summertown to 50mph.

A415 at Culham — consider increase from 30mph limit to 40mph. (again, wide, open, straight road with good sightlines and few hazards)

A415 between Clifton Hampden and Burcot — consider increase from 30mph to 50mph. (this one has always been nuts - the nearest houses are set so far back from the road that there are no hazards and the limit stretches miles into the countryside)

A417/A4130 and A4185 by Rowstock roundabout — consider increase to 40mph from 30mph.

These limits are being "consulted on"* at the moment, so there's an address below if people would like to respond. I know it makes not one jot of difference, but if people don't object, the limits will keep falling, the camera vans enforcing them.

An example of enforcing a limit that's too slow for the conditions very often - even though it's by a school:

You can write to the local press here:

cwalker@oxfordmail.co.uk

And Geoff Barrell at Oxfordshire County Council is the chap responsible for motorcycles and the introduction of the blanket 30mph limits in the county.

geoff.barrell@oxfordshire.gov.uk

If you do write in, please make sure you're reasoned and reasonable.

  • Consultation: the process by which Oxfordshire County Council claims to want to "listen to concerns" but does so with its fingers wedged in its ears, singing "la la la la can't hear you" and then does what it wanted to anyway.
