Private Plate Auction

Got one on retention? Now's your chance to flog it off at Auction

Auto-Identity Registration Auctions hopes to attract up to one thousand entries from private owners of Cherished and Personalised registrations for its first auction this summer.

Stuart Allen, the Worcester based businessman behind the venture said, “In addition to buying plates for their own cars, many people have built up quite large collections as an alternative investment portfolio, often retaining the numbers on DVLA Certificates rather than vehicles. It is these people that we are looking to contact us, although anyone with a suitable registration is welcome to apply ”.

Priority entry will be given to registrations that do not have a Suffix or Prefix date letter, as well as any registrations that resemble names and words.

Believed to be the first National event of this type it hopes to attract buyers from all over the UK, although bidding can also be done by post and telephone, should you be unable to attend in person.

The DVLA has been selling new, previously ‘unused’ registration numbers at Public Auction for many years, raising millions of pounds for the treasury. “We have attended a great many of the DVLA auctions, and there is always a superb atmosphere, and this is what we will aim to recreate, but for the benefit of private sellers rather than the Government ” said Mr Allen. He added “We have chosen to hold the event at Worcester Rugby Club as it has superb facilities, just 300 yards from the M5. Close to the heart of the UK Motorway network. They have also shown a great deal of enthusiasm for the event ”.

Should prove interesting. So many people look at dealer's sites, see similar plates to their own and think oh that's what I'd get for mine. The mark up charged by some of these agencies is somewhat remarkable.

The truth is unless the plate is a very good one it can prove difficult to sell at the sort of prices advertised by traders.

Agree with you about margins. I had an agency ring me saying they had received a "good offer" for one of my numbers that would return to me £500, it was on their web site for £3,250 !
Needless, to say I told them to shove it up there A55 H01E
