You could expect this back in 1910, but the A66 ( the main trans -pennine road ) is still closed. 4 days its been closed.

When it was upgraded to dual carriagway 20 years ago, we were told this road will never close due to severe weather. I think its closed because they dont want to clear it or haven't got the grit.

The detour is bad for a car ,but for HGV's it must add hours to the journey.

It gets pretty bad up there, and there's only so much can be done to combat mother nature. I've gone across in a nissan patrol and been blown onto 2 wheels, the same trip I saw 2 lorries shed their loads, (one was carrying a portacabin which an audi RS6 parked itself in) and 3 lorries get blown over (sadly, one was a greggs lorry, RIP pasties). More recently I went across the full length of it the other day just before it closed (they were turning traffic back before I hit scotch corner) and it was pretty hairy looking in places, if it got much worse I could see why they closed it.

Short on grit? Probably, but it's a road that's taken quite a few lives so I can understand their reluctance to leave it open, especially given the standard of driving seen by some people on it. Still, the back roads are fun!

Where there's a will, there's a way.

No will left in this country, unless there's £££s in it.

Wonder if it would still be closed if it were a 'toll' route?
