Fuel Duty Must Be Frozen, Says AA

Petrol prices near record high as Labour prepares for extra tax take

A 17% rise in European wholesale petrol prices since late January is threatening to push UK average pump prices above the July 2008 record, warns the AA, which is calling on the Government to investigate the sudden surge.

This will hurt even more from April...
This will hurt even more from April...
A weaker pound is aggravating the potential for price rises, with 120p a litre possible - even before the Government is scheduled on 1 April to add 3p in fuel duty and VAT on to the cost of petrol and diesel.

At the weekend, the AA reports that average UK petrol prices rose to 115.93p a litre and, compared to late January/early February prices, the price of a tank of petrol could increase by £4.

"The UK is barely out of recession yet petrol prices threaten to rise to record prices seen during the boom of 2008 - shortly before the collapse into recession," says Edmund King, the AA's president.

"The AA believes the Government should look at what is behind it. With refiners in Europe closing sites or looking to sell them, soaring wholesale prices could drive down demand and weaken the sector further.

"In the AA's opinion, the easiest and quickest stabiliser would be to freeze the fuel duty increase on 1 April."

Our government are robbing us blind. The billions they rake in from fuel duty, road tax, tax on car insurance, purchase tax, tax on maintenance…

And yet our roads are in the worst state ever.

Thieves pure and simple

Will the conservatives be any better… I hold my breath.

We roll over and take it again and again, it sickens me

And let's not forget the sneaky 2p rise we had in duty when VAT was reduced to 15%, we are now back at 17.5%, but the higher duty remains in place.

how do i miss such a large tax increase.

This tax affects everyone in the country in one form or another, whether its you directly as a driver and paying at the pumps, or whether you are paying more for your items in the shop due to high delivery costs.

So why does it always seem to slip though so stealth, the only time i ever hear about it is when the papers kick off about it going up and say there is a planned increase next month etc.

But 3p its going up, how do they justify that,

We need our falklands oil soon!!!!!

If they don't do it on fuel then they will no doubt just add it to something else instead... the country is stuffed at the moment with dept so the govenment needs to get the money in...again.

But... perhaps rather than rapping drivers YET AGAIN they should look at the millions they give out to benifit cheating scumbags each year.

When the barrel price of oil was at $148 then maybe I could see why the pump price would be higher, but the barrel price at the moment is $80.
So the barrel price is no longer the scapegoat. The wholsale cost is controlled by the oil companies themselves, this coupled with the current government tax regime on fossil fuels gives us problems at the pumps!

1. The oil companies need to be reigned back (but as oil = power this is unlikely, look at the conflicts in the middle east for as long as I have been alive!)
2. Production needs to increase (the petroleum companies have been cutting back due to the 'recession')
3. The governemnt needs to reform its fossil fuel tax and bring it in to the modern era. (Again, unlikely as they have no cash at the moment)

There is little point complaining because:
a) The oil companies won't listen (they are a business remember..
b) The governemnt will pretend to listen but has its hands tied due to its rampant borrowing during the noughties.

People with the right to vote, I beg you go and vote.
Not only UK goverment has sent the pound down the drain but is also robbing citizens at each turn in broad daylight. UK has one of the lowest fuel prices before tax and highest after tax in Europe!

Do something about it!

excactly if they want us out of a recession they need to drop petrol ASAP so people can afford to spend more.

its not fair that these robber bast**rds can take so much money for a item which the country needs. mad

what is worse is that i have always had hot hatches and now these cu*nts have got me looking at polo blumotion and priuses to save some money furious

we need to nuke the labour party from orbit.

We have always been shafted on the taxes/duties on fuel, but this is out of control. I know the oil companies have increased prices and there is still some speculative buying, but this still does not add up to the exaggerated pump cost.

Hate this useless goverment, always have.

Debt caused by the government’s mismanagement at nearly every turn. Compounded by allowing credit offering to the public to be so unregulated, resulting in more credit cards in the UK than the rest of Europe combined!

UK Plc is screwed, and they are again tapping us to cover the shortfall

Us lot moaning on PH wont make a blind bit of difference...

Until there is another groundswell of oppinion and people activly protest in some manner nothing will change at all.. At the moment they are getting away with it and even succeding in driving some people to public transport.

which is responsible for 80% of all vehicle CO2 emissions, are never on time, and fares are ever increasing. Never has the number of people unsatisfied people grown so much.
Difficult to know what to do, when the government cares about themselves first, and then THE PEOPLE THEY WORK FOR. Petitions come and go about this sort of thing, but they are always pointless and have no effect whatsoever. All I know is I have no hope left for this country. Voting will not make one slight bit of difference. Elections in this country amuse me: every candidate says 'vote for me, because I'm slightly less full of st than the others'. Love the fact they make themselves out to be the lesser of two (or more) evils.
