Official: C-Charge Extension To Go In Six Months

Boris's transport strategy includes abolition of part of London c-charge zone

London Mayor Boris Johnson has officially confirmed plans to abolish the unpopular western extension of the London congestion charge zone.

In his Mayor's Transport Strategy, published on Monday, Bo Jo promised to get rid of the western arm of the C-charge in the next six months.

"You will note that the strategy involves the proposed removal of the western extension to the congestion charge zone," says Boris. "There has been public opposition to the western extension, confirmed during the consultation to this strategy and informal consultation on the zone's removal in 2008. I now intend to consult the public and stakeholders on the making of a draft order for the revocation of the western extension with a view to removing it by the end of the year."

The Mayor's announcement is the second setback for congestion charging in a week, after residents rejected plans by York city council to introduce congestion charging.

Instead, York residents favour improving bus services and creating a freight depot on the outskirts of the city to help tackle traffic - which is expected to grow by 28 per cent by 2021.

It's not all good news, however - buried in Boris's plans for London is the ominous promise that "the application of road user charging may be explored in the longer term in other circumstances where it can be appropriately tailored to local conditions and suitably implemented".

The motorist isn't free yet, it seems...

Good news then - at least for the time being...glad that York one is a no-go too, being much closer to me.

Why does it takes 6 months to abolish though?!

Want to reduce congestion (and number of accidents!)? Get uninsured drivers off the road!

Confiscate the car and minimum £2500 fine (enforced out of any source of income) for driving without insurance

Private Eye has been calling Boris Bo Jo for ages - it was just a reference to that, rather than a SamCam-SuBo bandwagon jump...

Don't worry about that road pricing caveat - it's just a sop to those bothersome greens.

The congestion chargeis nothing, I've been hearing rumours about road tolls rearing their heads again - and quite soon from what I've heard... frown

Although I don't use motorways that much, but if they are true, it would cripple what remains of the UK transport industry I reckon.

Highly unlikely (read: no chance) the tories would put that through.

There's a large hardware store in Macclesfield, advertising itself very boldly, in black and yellow, by the railway station, as 'S&M Supplies'. Also, many years ago, I was writing a piece for an American in-flight magazine and found myself speaking to the editor, a Mr. Randy Johnson.

I had to drive in the western extension today to pick up my young son from hospital (he's fine now smile )

I'm happy to pay hospital parking, but the £8 congestion charge for my unwell 9 month boy is disgusting.

I loved the western extension as it was poetic justice to all the NIMBY 4X4 drivers that live in Kensington and Chelsea. If you remember they were courted by Red Ken and convinced to vote yes on the congestion zone as he promised it wouldn't cover them. Then when the area became full of vehicles avoiding the zone it was extended to catch these vehicles and got the NIMBYS crying in their fair trade soya moccachinos. He then threatened to tax their chelsea tractors of the road and they turned on him like the sanctimonious tarts that they are. No point having morals if you can't change them eh?

It also amazes me that when this lot moan that they are being done an injustice because they are being charged to drive tamara chardoney 300 yards to school (ironically not fussed about 7 mpg around town) the powers that be jump through hoops to sort them out, but when 'white van' man and 'drive-to-work-cos-there-are-no-transport-links-near-me-and-the-ones-i-can-get-to-never-work' man complain about the increased cost of making a living or getting to work no one cares.
