Toyota Recalls 1.5 Million Cars Over Brake Worries
Another week, another global recall for Toyota (and Lexus)
Worries over brake and fuel pump defects have caused Toyota to issue a recall for 1.5 million cars globally. This takes its total number of vehicles recalled during the past year to more than 10 million and its tally of separate recall for 2010 to 14.
The latest recall will affect 740,000 cars in the US, 600,000 in Japan and 17,000 in the UK and covers some Toyota Highlander and Avalon models and various Lexuses. UK models affected are some IS, GS and RX models built between 2003 and 2005.
Toyota has revealed that fluid may be leaking from some cars' brake master cylinders. This could cause a spongy brake pedal and a gradual decline in braking performance - although Toyota says that even when the brake warning light is triggered, the car still has 200 miles to go before braking performance begins to deteriorate.
To be fair to Toyota, you can't fault the lengths it's prepared to go to in order to show that it's doing everything it can to make sure its cars are safe - but5 a 1.5 million car recall has got to be the last thing ToMoCo's bruised public image needed...
I'm now about to have the 4th engine rebuild on my Gen 7 Celica due to oil starvation problems, to be fair to them they did offer an extended warranty so you could have your engine replaced for free, but this was 2 years after my 1st rebuild so it was refused. What they should have done is recalled all 1.8 VVTi engines, but this would have ended Toyota for good I feel.
Bunch of jokers and they shall not be seeing any of my money ever again.
I suspect that many less scrupulous manufacturers would not have globally recalled their vehicles for a warrenty type repair, probably instead just telling individual customers during routine servicing that the part needs replacing due to wear and tear.

Though I fear that you are a little behind the times PH:
Its diabolical, any other marque that had to recall that many cars would have been crucified.

Now, if they could start building that RWD coupe thing...
