It relates to this thread.

"Future Of Jaguar Land Rover's UK Plants Secure"

Question is whether the Indians having gained a Chinese partner for Jaguar will take the next step and shift production out there as well.

I think people underestimate how huge a market China is. Luxury saloons sell very well and the market is burgeoning rapidly. Has nothing to do with UK plants, really.

When they do eventually shift production over to China or somewhere else (they will do) it doesn't mean the brand will die? It'll actually mean they are committed to producing the vehicles rather than just sticking with a no doubt more costly plant(s) in the UK, I see it as a good thing for the longevity of the brand?

I imagine they would supply the Chinese Market with cars made locally.
Would the uk Market stomach a Chinese made rr or jaguar?. I do not think so

Wait a sec, you can imagine people will be saying "This Indian car is no longer made in the UK their-fore I cannot buy!"

More to the point would the Chinese market want a Jaguar that wasn't made in the UK? I doubt it. That's the whole point. Furthermore, I think that it both defeatist and wrong to assume that manufacturing will 'inevitably' be transferred out to China or Korea or anywhere else. I see no reason (given a sensible tax and employment regime) why car manufacturing cannot flourish in Britain.

Provided of course that the Germans are in charge! wink

Rich Chinese people don't care about where something comes from, all they care about is the badge, which in turn means showing how wealthy and powerful you are.

Do Mercedes Benz, Citroen and other manufacturers have plants in China? I believe the reason was to get around import taxation there. Plus it is a huge market and if they can sell more Jags it means more money for the company which means they can continually update, improve and beat the other luxury manufacturers which can only be a good thing?

Mercedes definitely don't, as far as I know. It would make a USP for Jaguar and would mean that people purchasing them would pay less tax.

OK I would accept that, but I still refuse to give up on manufacture in the UK.

Nobody is saying they will be or are shifting European/American production to China, it just makes very obvious fiscal sense to create Jags for the Chinese market in China. It's a relatively untapped market and the tax is high on imported vehicles.

Mercedes and BMW both build cars in India. They may not be up to german standards but are still better than most locally built cars.
A Mercedes is still a Mercedes, wherever it is built. Same would apply to jaguar if they built in china for the Chinese Market.

You do know Landrovers have been built all over the world under licence since the year dot, and they still are. There is a plant in India assembling Landrover Vehicles curently, it doesn't make any difference to the UK plant.

The reason for a plant in China is that it would dramatically reduce the cost of a Jaguar as at the moment vast import tax is paid. Audi already do it, I think.

Audi has a JV with FAW in Changchun and build cars there
