Peugeot Numbers Game

Running out of numbers for their cars so a new system had to be found

For Peugeot, identification of its different car models by means of numbers featuring a central 0 is an isynonymous with the range. Their ownership of the trademark numbers even resulted in the Porsche Coupe becoming the 911 rather than the 901.

With an increasing product range Peugeot were becoming hampered by the limitations of the scheme so they've adopted a new style. Rather than stick with the single '0', marketing types in France came up with a new scheme would feature the name of a farmyard animal in the middle. Top brass at Peugeot kicked out that idea as well as one involving Cyrillic script and pictures of monkeys and have gone for two '0's instead of one.

Then the top brass realised that adding a second '0' wouldn't actually increase the range of names available other than freeing up some for reuse. So now letters will be added to the end of the numbers. e.g. for the Coupé Cabriolet body style is designated by the letters CC and the family/leisure vehicles identified by SW.

Frédéric Saint-Geours, the CEO of Peugeot, explains: "For each family of models, we apply a strategy which is like a daisy surrounded by individual petals. Therefore, around a central model, we mimic the individual petals. This system, already applied to the 206, 307 and 407, is simple and clear. "

This new development of the numbering system was tested in 2003 with the Peugeot 4002, the winner of the 2nd Peugeot Design Competition. This new system will shortly feature for the first time on a new production model.

An original vehicle, derived from the Sésame concept car presented at the 2002 Paris Motor Show, will in its production form display a number with a double central 0, preceded by a 1, designating the family to which it belongs, and followed by a 7, chronologically indicating its generation.

The new 1007 (pronounced ‘One Double 0 Seven’) will be presented to the public before the end of this year.

That's cleared that up then...

I thought only dodgy old Soviet cars used 4-digit numbers, like the ZIL 4104 and the ZAZ 8102 and so on.

Maybe it was the number of miles they'd do before exploding

Are you sure you didnt find this news on April 1st?

How does adding another 0 solve either problem...they cant go lower than 1 on the front or higher than 9 on the end
