Rumours in the motoring press this week seem to point to confirming Tesco venturing into used motor dealing, with them as per usual undercutting established dealers.
The ethos being retailng used cars on short margins per unit with profit coming from their finance and insurance buisiness.
The thoughts of PH would be of interest I wont post an opinion as I am biased!

They should leave it alone just like mini markets and electrical retailers. They're just too big and out of control. It's a business yes, but they are set for World domination at this rate.

My local Tesco 'Hypermarket' even has a bloody hand car wash designed to take business off the local immigrant-run one.

£1 in every £5 spent in the UK goes to Tesco. Last year, it was £1 in every £7. They'll dominate the UK soon.

Would be nice to see a trusted name venture into the used car market in a big way and give the customer a bit more security.

Tesco though? Ugh.

More consumer choice has to be good news all round.

I suspect Tesco will do to the little local indie car
dealer what they helped do to the little local butcher,
fishmonger and general store: provide the cold hard wind
of economic competition.

In case you hadnt noticed we are in the worst recession(cold hard winter) in living memory for most of us!
Used car dealing isnt just a simple buisness involving number crunching,it wouldnt supprise me if they we just retailing their own exfleet stock rather than the usual trade at auction hence cutting out the midddle man, there is no "magic" supply of cars for dealers if Tesco were to throw their hat in the ring and purchase stock from the same supply as most other dealers IMO it would drive stock up in value,we are seeing stock at auction making silly money at present, this is due to the downturn meaning less deals less stock and more dealers bidding silly money to purchase the prime stock.
Also FWIW the cars we have purchased in the past from them at auction are usuallly poor spec with minimal franchise history, they service a lot of their stock in house.

fking place. I wish Terry would ps off and take all his fking stores with him.

They're even doing hair and beauty now in some shops. They represent everything that's wrong, rotten, greedy and gluttonous. They want money from anything and everything, and really couldn't give a st about anyone else trying to make a living.

Wake up you dozy s, if you start to sell everything cheap, there will be no small businesses left in the country and no one to come into your bloated stores to buy cheap Chinese made consumer crap.

I hope the Directors and shareholders choke on their Fois Gras.

Spot on.

Just take a look at local towns these days. Everywhere is struggling trying! The fact is that the small independent business today simply cannot compete against the large supermarkets.

Our towns are dying. How can a small shop owner compete with business rates / rent going up each year ? As more and more shops close in towns across the country the footfall will only drop further and make it harder for the ones trying to scrape a living and survive.

The supermarket supremacy will eventually hit us all in the pocket and by then we shall be well and truly fked!

Let them do it. If they keep dominating markets and earning that much money, they'll have to sell assets in order to maintain competition. So, set up tyre/Garage centres up for sale as we come out of a recession. Doesn't sound all bad. it won't be as easy as 1,2,3, but could be beneficial in the long run.

Thought the C4 The People's Supermarket might be worth a mention (anyone been watching it?). Not sure if it will take off as well as it has in the USA but, could be a good foil against the big names in the business.
