Returned from the MOT this mornin' with a whole stack of failures frown

BUT

My (current) biggest problem is how to resolve the front disc replacement !

I have an '01 4.5 whose hubs look like this....

Now there are A LOT of threads on brake problems and solutions, so many in fact that I have become completely confused. What with Bells, Rotors and Bobbins..

Of all the Web-based resources I normally use, it appears that the only providers of a replacement for my year/model are Racetech TVR but their kit appears to be a combined Disc and Bell (IF I understand what the Bell is ??) and I feel sure that mine are separate Disc and Bell.

Are they attached by the 12 Allen bolts depicted in my photo ?

Can anyone offer any advice ?

Many thanks for any energy expended on this clueless moron !

Paul

(P.S. Hope youn all had a good Chatsworth)

The bell is the centre part that the disk ( rotor )bolts to.
AP don't sell the original size anymore but you can buy a slightly bigger rotor, this means spacing your caliper out slightly ( 4mm ), a simple job.
Other companies do sell a similar size rotor but I forget who.

Or like you say, you can buy a standard one piece brake disk.

I can't remember the website name but there was a place (I think set up by ex AP guys) that were selling discs with the correct bolt PCD and dimensions as a direct replacement.

Trying to find it now but not having much luck.

thats far too cheap! Are they a pile of poo? Why not the AP 330mm version?

By the way if anyones getting the spacers made then I'll have a couple.

I don't know what the quality is like, I payed extra for the AP rotors.

As for spacers, just some 4mm think Aluminium plate, drilled for the the two bolts to locate through.

Why not just have them skimmed?

Or is that a big no no?

Provided you don't end up with discs below the minimum thickness, skimming should be ok.

Re. the questions in the original post, yes yours are the two piece discs. They have a standard AP bolt pattern, so you can attach to them anything with the same bolt pattern (and then you have to space the caliper accordingly). The standard TVR disc is 322mm in diameter and you could never buy these directly from AP as like the clutch there is a contract between TVR and AP that prevents them from selling TVR parts.

Your cheapest option is to keep the bells for another day and fit one piece Tuscan S discs which are the same diameter. I have a suspicion that these will be thinner than the ally bell of the two piece setup and you'll need the 3mm spacer that Matt at Silverstone Performance worked out was needed on Tuscans. Alternatively you can buy a new bolt kit and some discs, which was roughly double the price of the Tuscan S one piece items when I did it a few years ago (I have 330x28s).

Unfortunately, the tester said they were cracked so skimming not on for me frown

Ok so it looks like I am in the same boat now as you Paul. I took my disks to my engineering place and they believe they are too worn to be skimmed. We couldn't see the minimum thickness so going on his judgment.

Mine are the two piece items similar to Pauls above but without the cross drills.

Those rotors mentioned above are they sold as a pair or is that 135+vat each? I can't see it on the description!
And the spacers do they have to be anything elaborate?

It seems they are sold as a single unit so by the time you have added the vat which makes them £162 then bought new bolts and messed around with spacers they will end up more expensive than the TVR Power AP ones

Or have I missed something?

Yes! The Power listed items are the one piece not separate bells versions.

There are at least 3 options:-
-> 330 cheapo sep bells ones above with new bolts n spacers
-> 330 AP's spe bells ones again with new bolts n spacers
-> Single piece from Tuscan S as per Power but no spacers etc afaik but maybe new bolts.

But whats the point in going for the Rotors as opposed to the single piece units from Power? the rotors seem to work out more money! Admittedly they are a slightly larger in diameter which would give slightly better braking but 8mm will that be really noticeable?
The bolts I mention are to bolt the two piece together £20+vat from the above link so not needed for the power ones.

Depends on what you want I guess. The separate rotors (certainly the AP ones) are considered an upgrade whereas the single piece ones a downgrade.
You can sell your bells and make some money back.
