Hi everyone,

First time putting oil in the Cerb and managed to really overfill her....so rather than an airbox full of oil, decided to drain some off thru the sump.

The nut undid quite easy and when tightening up, it doesn't feel like its tight at all, its more than finger tight but almost when I feel the socket ratchet getting some resistance behind it, it goes easy again.

Is this how they should be, or should you be able to tighten them good and proper?

Cheers

Sounds to me like the thread is stripped. Not that big a problem to be honest. Mine ended up stripping and all I did was get on eBay and buy a thread kit to tap it out to a larger size. (I'd normally post a link but am currently doing this from my iPhone). If my memory servers me right it's a 17mm kit that you want.

OP, just checked your profile mate and it appears that your in London. In this kit there were 6 new plugs, if you want to pop over to me at some point I'll give you one out of the kit.

Cant see how Ive over done it tbh, my hand was on the centre part of the wrench when doing back up, didnt even need to put my hand anywhere near the end the wrench to get it tight.....it did come off pretty easy too.

If you use the helicoil or time insert kit I would be very carefull if you have to drill the sump,
yes there is a strainer on the end of the pickup, but a tiny fragment gets through and you risk
picking up a main bearing.

Not you but who did the last service? Threads don't strip them selfs in that application of a sump plug, Over tighting seems like the only logical option unless it has taken a knock when the sump guard plate has not been on the car?

Last few services before I bought her were done by Raceproved, could be a new bolt too as it looks much cleaner than the rest of the underside. May simply be a wrong size bolt perhaps?

I thought they had a good rep but if it's loose then it should have been re-coiled/threaded without question - Just like Andy at APM does. thumbup

Have you been eating too much Spinach ?? hehe

Well re-tapped the thread thanks to M3John, all the kit and advice I could ever need...absolute top guy....filled her back up with some nice fresh 10W50 esther oil from Opies. Sump plug lovely and tight.

The previous thread was almost smooth to the touch and can see bits of the thread still attached to the old plug, not good. Amazed the previous plug had any purchase at all tbh. Pressure looks to be a little lower than before, 47psi at normal running instead of bang on 50, drops to 37/40 on hot idle, picks back up to 55/60psi on a good push. Do those numbers sound ok?

Sounds pretty low for 50 weight oil tbh. Have you changed the pressure relief spring recently?

What size thread did you use in the end? Was it 17mm?

First run out on he 10w/50 so I'm not sure. Previous readings were 50ish when up to temps, so it's a little lower, but oil going in looked thinner than the stuff coming out to my eye, so I wouldn't be surprised if it's a little lower.

When I bought her from BCA, I was getting 60 on immediate start up, 50 or so when warmed and 40 on hot idle, on the new oil it starts at about 55, did drop just below 40 when at traffic lights etc, but picks back up to 47/50 when moving.

Was told that 12o'clock/6o'clock on the oil pressure/temp gauge was the norm on this car from Ben.

What are other people's pressures??

Ace, did you helicoil insert it or just re-tap the hole and buy a bigger plug?

My oil pressure is normally near 2 0'clock running, between 12'0clock and 1 'clock when stuck in traffic and hot!
