So here it is,my 1stPH post!A friend of mine passed away recently,& it made me think- life isn't about dreaming,it should be about making dreams come true,making fantasy a reality.(although I may struggle with the one about the Brazillian twins & a can of Castrol).Ever since I heard,or rather FELT my 1st TVR go past,I have dreamed of owning one.Im gonna make it happen.A Cerb is my beast of choice.
I've spent hrs & hrs reading these forums,most of which has gone over my head as I'm a mechanical dunce to put it mildly.The tiv community seems fantastically helpful,a little bit of which I'm hoping will find its way to me.
So,could I please have your views,advice & pi@* taking on the following:
1.Being a mechanical dumbass,am I mad to take on a Cerb?Coz even when the most simple of things go wrong,I'm just gonna stare at it like a Japanese tourist does at the word Loughborough.
2. (having ignored your advise to buy a Ford Focus & work harder at the twins thing)I have a budget of 15k I was wondering wether to spend 13 on the car & have the rest as a rainy day fund,or spend the lot on the car & save as I go along.
3.Bearing this in mind,is there any examples out there on PH that you would recommend? I know its a personal thing but its hard to evaluate that A looks better than B coz its got xyz on it when you're a noob.

Mate to be fair, Im not clever with spanners myself but Im on my 2nd cerb. The 2nd one has been a bit of a mare recently but it helps if you are friendly with a specialist!! Some of the silly things you will be able to do yourself even if you are clueless (Hey its just bolts right?)
Make sure the Cerb you buy has a comprehensive history. Dont panic if its had a lot of work done - This can be good. Dont buy one thats been sitting around for a long time, and try and buy off an enthusiast (Someone on here maybe) as they will have taken the time to look after it properly. Just bear in mind clutches last about 20k too, so check if its had one.
Buy on colour, buy with your heart but make sure you have a 500 quid shed of a car to take to Sainsbury and back and they dont like stop start trips under 20 mins

EFAAnd just for the record, as has been well documented on these pages, Im am hopeless with anything mechanical, but have had a Cerb for 7 years (although I am well know to my local Indy
) so dont let lack of mechanical knowledge put you off.

Do it. I've learnt some mechanical stuff by running TVRs just to save the hassle of going to a garage for stuff that can easily be done at home (so long as you don't value the skin on your arms lol)
^^^^^^^^ This for me....Wanted one for 14 years after 1 drive in a Chim. From my perspective I'm happy to get stuck in and learn....and trust me I prob have less mechanical knowledge than FUBAR, but really want to learn how to do some stuff myself...my poor Cerb has gone from being looked after by TVR experts to a complete numpty like me...I've already done a couple of very small jobs myself, albeit with MUCH help from forum members and her previous owner!!

Cheers guys.It encouraging to know I'm not the only Mr Bean out there! Time to get serious now & start a short list,which prob won't be that short! Any rough idea how much the local Indies charge to do an inspection for you? Was thinking originally of getting a "well known" inspector to source one for me,but having reading on here will give it a miss.Thanks for the replies,hopefully I'll get to know a free peeps & this time next year won't feel like the new kid at school.
Jump in feet first. I was in a similar position to you a year ago and suddenly realised I could afford a cerb and I never thought that would even be an option.
As you have realised there is lots of help on here, but I would recommend a contingency fund. I feel like I am now Jason of str8six's best customer (and my girlfriend has got v used to the trips to Lewknor). But I genuinely believe I have been unlucky on that front. I am still going on a 3000 mile trip round Europe at the end of the month and the worst thing you would want is to spend a lot of money getting it sorted and fixing a few problem and then be forced to sell.
It was also the first car I had owned and working in london didn't have any insurance no claims bonus to speak of. Speaking insurers was amusing, but you can do it and i was pleased to get a deal I was happy with after a number of phone calls. As per my opening comment, just do it. You will not find a better more fun car, except perhaps another TVR. Today I have spent half of my time skiving off work walking round the moto expo at Canary Wharf and there is still no car there I would actually rather own (ignoring the money side), not even the replica C type (esp at £87k). Buy and enjoy

Hexham Horseless Carriages (HHC) has a few in at your price range. I know its a trek from Dudley but I used to travel from Aberdeen to HHC just because I trusted Tony, the guy who runs it.
He has a very nice speed 6 that had its chassis redone in 1995 (its the purple one on the website). I have my eye on it as an import for the US but I may be being a bit silly for trying that route. If you want it, fill your boots!
