Had a few niggles and now a problem!

Hi,
I've had my 1999 4.5 for a good few months now and am loving the car. I had a couple of small niggles which were a faulty passenger door button and a small fuel leak which I've sorted out and enjoyed doing as I want to know my way around the car.
I used it last a couple of weeks ago and had to go into london on a red hot day and sat in a lot of traffic, it was faultless with fans coming in around the 95-100c mark. Once I got the car home I let in car for a few hours and checked it over, which included taking the coolant cap off checking the coolant and doing it back up tightly.
Then I used it last night for 20 min round trip, no traffic and gave it a small blast on the way home. I pulled on my drive opened a gate then heard the fans kick in, as I pulled in the garage I notice steam pouring out of the coolant tank area and temp was only at 95c. I shut it off , took the panel off and water was bubbling out around the cap! Id say it lost a good couple of liters of water.
Do you have any ideas what could have caused this? I hate knowing she's poorly in garage.

Samething happened to my Tuscan yesterday, no idea why. I think it just didn't want to go out in the rain!

Was the cap on correctly, maybe overfilled, cap ok?

Had this a while back - replace the cap, bled the system and has been fine for 4 years now.
Dont think the caps are brilliant, VAG part but not sure what off.

I had a lot of cooling issues with my Tuscan, all traced to an ill fitting filler cap with a dodgy thread. I'd suggest replacing the filler cap - £10 fix!

Yep the rad cap is the first thing to change - they don't have the best reputation. You may have damaged a seal when you took it off??

Thanks alot for the advice. A new cap it is then! Is there a preferred way to bleed the system when filling it back up?

Check out the equiv parts list, Euro parts sell them for about £3.50 each, i got one a few months ago and it is fine.

You may have over filled the tank and since the cap is designed to release over pressurised water this could be your problem and not a faulty cap. You may also have a faulty temp switch which was my problem.
