Can you smell petrol?

Got back from Le Mans last week after a wounderful 900 mile faultless round trip and put the car back into it's cosy garage.

Pulled the car out the other evening to wash, clean and remove the stickers - car looked fanstastic so took it out for a spin. Got to the top of the road and got a really strong smell of fuel!!!! Strange we thinks...earlier this year I replaced all fuel lines wrapped in heat protective cloth so can't be a split pipe??? Anyway, had to stop as I was getting extemely worried.

Opened the bonnet and looked at the fuel line, all looks OK but just tilted my head to look under the bulk head trim to see the pipe had completely come off the fuel rail regulator.

OH F**K!!! Fuel was freely flowing from the regulator on top of the coil packs and down the side of the bell housing. I couldn't turn it off quick enough as I flapped about as if someone had just set light to me! Must have looked a right knob.

Needless to say, I did turn it off and then spent the next half an hour cleaning fuel away and reconnecting the fuel hose. This pipe was tight, I know it was as I must have tried all the pipes several times at time of replacement 3 months ago. Looking at it now I must have tighten the clip over the top of the bolbous end of the regulator and it was able to wiggle loose and come off.

I'm thinking I should do the lottery this weekend or have I already pushed my luck far enough...

That was lucky Simon, good job you haven't lost your sense of smell. When i have mine mot'd and serviced i always mention to the garage to check the fuel lines.

Glad it happened here just a few yards up the road rather than on the Autoroute in France when, travelling at speed with the windows down you might not have been able to sniff the fumes!
Hope it's all sorted. I'm suffering some serious Le Mans withdrawal symptoms...

Yes very lucky Mick a good sense of smell very important that day! Not seen you for probably a year or so...must get to one of the meets in hope you might make it too.

Hi Matt, I know what you mean "withdrawal symptoms". I was only saying earlier "this time two weeks ago the tent was up and the beers out with great company" my wife must be sick to death of hearing about it...At this rate she might want to come next year, but on the other hand...BOYS ONLY!

I came through Bicester last week on the way to a meeting in Warminster - I did keep an eye open for a slow green Cerb or wedge but (of course) saw niether!
