Hi All,

Hope you are all enjoying this wonderful driving weather !

A question for all you Silencer geniuses out there.

One of the reasons Black Beauty failed the MOT was exhaust so I am now trying to refit the original silencer. I have bought two new rubbers on which to hang it and find myself in the Catch 22 situation of - in order to raise the silencer high enough to mount on the rubbers there's not enough room to get my (small) hands in and actually hang the rubbers on the chassis

Any ideas ????

Hi Pete, It was given one mark (attention required) for noise but failed on emissions. Never failed before with the standard box which is why I'm resetting to standard.

Cheers Gray. That gets me looking in a useful direction.
I imagine the ideal tool would start like that but have some type of pulley on the end with a chain by which I could draw the rubber onto the Silencer or the Chassis Hook.

Are we talking the pig nose rubbers? If so I did mine last week. One was a tt but I used fairy liquid, brute force and a kitchen knife. The other was easy and this may help you. Somebody prior to me had trimmed off the rim of the hanger so once more with soap and a lever and with the rubber on the exhaust it was a simple job of lifting the tail pipe and with a bit of pressure pushing it on..... ....... I have small hands to :-)

The hangers unbolt from the chassis quite easily. I have always found it far easier to unbolt them leaving them attached to the rubbers and take them off with the silencer. Also when you are putting them back there is sufficient spring in the rubber that you can just lodge the thread in the holes in the chassis and it will support the weight of the silencer while you straighten up the exhaust joints.

I did wonder about doing that myself as that was my last resort. One of my hangers is upside down to balance the levels.

Put a large stainless jubilee clip right round the rubbers. Then you can adjust the height easily with the screw on the clip. It makes levelling tail pipes a doddle.

Turned the hangers through 180 Deg, applied copious amounts of brute ignorance and on they went. Changed the hangers back afterwards and all's well !

Just a quick question and may be a silly one but if the car failed on emmisions why are you changing the back box?

No logic at all. It just passed with the standard box on and failed without.

Went round to visit someone at the weekend. He'd just bought a Chim.
His faced looked very disappointed as I approached. he then admitted:
"Couldn't hear you coming !"

Gave a lift to a retired Truck Driver yesterday. We hadn't gone 300M before he commented "Has your exhaust got a hole in it ?" to which I laughed and explained that he should have heard her with the sports pipes on.

So has the car now passed the emmissions test by changing the back box?

If so then I would suggest that the car just needed setting up for the new flow pattern of the sports syatem unless I am mistaken and I often am the only part of the exhaust that should have an effect on emmissions is the cat.

Yup, just passed the test with the examiner saying that "It was on the limit. Get it fixed for the next time". Think you're right in what you say so I guess that's a new pair of Cats for me then.

Any suggestions as to where to acquire them from ??

I think Ireland got some that were cheap and got him through an MOT.

Other option is to de-cat her and find a friendly MOT station or buy the cheap cats and swap for the de-cat pipes at MOT time.

Hmmmm, slight problem with 'Decats' Martin. The MOTs are done by the Government over here, not by "Cerb friendly" chaps.

Guess I'll have to cough-up. Thanks for the suggestions though.
