tejr.. yhm..
Tanguero your comments are harsh but really ring true!
it really is about the blind leading the blind. we changed the ht leads ..the coil packs.. the sparks.and after this it ran reasonably well but with a very high idle.. all the posts on pistonheads suggested the high idle was the throttle pots so i enthusiastically changed them. Well my mechanic did .. Hes a great bloke but the reality is this is the first tvr he has worked and doesnt really know what going on.

Sorry to sound harsh, but seriously please take it to someone who knows what they are doing before you wreck the car. These are not just another engine - they have peculiarities and well intentioned but ignorant messing around by mechanics who do not understand the engine will do more harm than good.
They are easy enough to work on but you do have to understand how to do so. The manuals are available on line and for things like throttle pots there is a procedure that needs to be followed precisely.
BTW High idle is more likely to be a small adjustment of the idle screw needed, or an inlet side air leak. You can't just sling on new throttle pots without the tools and understanding to correctly set them up. It just wont work.

Yes Harsh but a valid point made, I work with loads of people like you, Clued up but very little people skills They are easy enough to work on but you do have to understand how to do so. i.d like to say a big thank you to tejr.. for coming down with his software and sorted out my cerb.. i then had the stupid idea of pressing the reset adaptive button..which completely screwed up our work.!
Why did resetting the adaptives do this and why did it then fail to idle after doing this and whats the fix.. sorry guys as you can see , electronic diagnosis is clearly not my strong point.
once again tejr .. thanks for your help.. promise to pay it forward if ever needed!

Resetting the adaptives didn't screw it up. You just need to drive it around for a while and it will re-learn a fresh set of adaptives. Particularly at low revs/small throttle openings (unfortunately
). It will sort its self out and be better than ever if it has been properly set up.

Likewise, kidding on

The idle screw is a simple adjustment an the drivers side bank, by the link rod. That can be adjusted without touching the rest of the setup.
However, if it won't idle at all (rather than just roughly) now that you have reset the adaptives then it doesn't sound like your throttle pots are right. Resetting the adaptives shouldn't make much difference at all if the banks have been balanced with a synchrometer and the throttle pots set up right from there. You really need to take it to a specialist.

At the risk of sounding predictable... follow the instructions in the Engine section of the workshop manual carefully. Its all there step by step and if you follow it exactly then you will get it set up right. If it won't idle after its set up then you need to start looking elsewhere, though if you have already changed coils and leads etc you should have covered most of the bases.
