Numpty Question - Dipstick
Discussion
Guys
As a new owner of this wonderful engine (sadly not the whole car), my dipstick is rather poorly marked. I understand the hole is just above the the max mark and there are two very poorly scribed lines in addition. One slighty below this and the other lower down. I presume these are max and min marks?
Two questions
1)Is the above assumption correct?
2)How much oil do you need to move from min to max - is it the usual 1 litre?
I have measured the oil cold and it is just sitting above the hole (in the dipstick) and wondering if I need to drain some off after over filling before I start up.
I couldn't find an answer on the history so trying a new topic.

Normay the high and low marks are quite distinct, can't remember where the hole is in relation. It is notoriously difficult to get a decent reading because the cylindrical neck of the dipstick near the end drags oil out with it - the best bet is to take the stick out and reinsert in the morning (fnarr) after the oil has seeped back down. Hope/doubt that is of help

Yes and yes. I have over filled by about the same as you mention and carried on without problem. Just remembered not to do it again.
Top tip for taking a measure, remove dipstick overnight and then you should get one fairly accurate reading the next morning. After one dip the reading is just a lottery

Had exact same confusion when I bought BCA's Cerbera....and managed to hugely overfill (twice)...on mine the difference between min/max is only about 3/4 litre, but the correct level for her is just over mid way between half and max....otherwise she get's all annoyed and spits it out through the drivers side catch tank and underneath the drivers tub!

Thank-you, now I have filled it up , I hope it stops the low pressure light and sudden fall in oil pressure under braking. I am assured it will
For reference the dipstick on the AJP errs on short/exaggerated side, ie the minimum recommended level is about 3mm below the maximum mark. It should be between max - 3mm and max + 2mm I think.Edit: just seen DJ Steve's post - I must have a short dipstick

Yes it has an amazingly convoluted route to the back of the block, in my car it could easily be much shorter. Why does it need to be so long, would it be too hard to get at, in a Cerbera if it was just straight up and down so to speak...
There is lots of margin for smears (no pun) when removing it...
