I have the above spare engine that runs fine etc, 40k miles, and I'm thinking about selling it, but I've never sold an engine before, so after a few pointers really.

Firstly, should I leave it in the car (where it is at present), so a potential buyer can hear it running etc?

Secondly, how much is it worth? and should I sell it with the gearbox or sell them separately....?

I'm not some vehicle dismantler, so I genuinely haven't got a clue.

Cheers FP smile

Not got a clue really, but I think £2k+ as when I was looking a few years ago breakers were asking £3k+ for a runner. If your current one is a runner whats going to replace it?

Get real - let the guys who are doing the LS transplant sort it out for you - easy.

They're not doing the transplant until later in the year, but there are other works to do first (colour change etc) and so the engine needs to come out anyway and don't particularly want it sitting on a pallet in my garage....

Thought you were sellilng the car a month ago?
Anyway - £2K seems about right to me. Being able to see and hear it running would be good.

I bought mine for a very good price closer to £2K than £3K for a 4.5 with a large journal steel crank. I do think I was lucky though , so £2K is not unreasonable. There is also value selling the manifolds and peripherals separately too. I would definitely be happier to buy in the car so you can listen and look at all the gauges and readings of your own if you wish.
I sold my original 5.0 Rover V8 for a very good price too back to the engine builder for another customers car.
Cheers Jon

Where abouts are you based? Is it later crank & full sh? When was last service & was it a 12k or 6?

I may be interested in getting a spare :-)

Gearbox £400ish, ITB's also worth a bit of money on their own, i sold mine to a guy who wanted to graft them on to an Aston!
Mine had a snapped crank so took £500 for it, it was going into a Dolly Sprint!
Never heard anymore of it though..

Who's doing it, and what are you having slapped in?

Hi all

I may be a bit late on this one but my '96 4.2 let go today on track. I was on my second lap , shifting up at 6krpm and not really pushing that hard when I changed from 3rd to 4th, the engine died instantly.

It died so quickly that when I went to engage 4th it nearly locked the back wheels up! Coasted to a halt and no obvious holes in the block, the only "damage" that could be seen was a/c belt had popped off.

Back in the pits we tried turning the engine over with a breaker bar on the crank pulley but it wasn't happening, even with 4 spark plugs out.

So I'm guessing here that the crank has snapped and I either need to :

1). Buy a second hand 4.2 or 4.5 (preferably)
2). Get it rebuilt to higher spec (may not be possible depending on damage internally and ££££)
3). LS swap - Costly and although a great engine I really like the AJP and how it delivers the power.

Tbh I am very gutted, I had only just had the AP twin plate clutch fitted 1k miles ago along with the Steve Heath droplinks and the car was driving superbly.

Any thoughts/suggestions/ideas/hugs greatly appreciated.

If it's of any interest I have a spare 4.2 sat in a barn I'm willing to sell - drop me a email if you like. Don't get too despondent - it's only a couple of days work to get the engine in / out even with my limited skills!

Cheers for the offers of support chaps, I'll pm all of those that have mentioned having engines available to check spec etc.

Thanks again!

eBay 270790408801 - £1500

You'd have to be brave, but it must have been working well enough to propel the car off the road in order to put a hole in the sump. Whether it ran at any time with no oil would difficult to determine before purchase.

I spoke to Dulfords, they don't have an engine unfortunately.

I don't think buying a block with a hole it in will help me out as at the moment mine doesn't seem to have one so it would be cheaper to get mine rebuilt than buy this one and get it repaired.
