Knob off

As per the title, I'm trying to get my gear knob off so that I can replace the gaiter. I have used the search facility and it seems perseverance is the key. But does anyone have any suggestions of what to use to get either the locking collar or knob off.

A piece of thin leather dampened and wrapped round the locking collar. Grab that with a mole wrench, firmly but not tight enough to distort the collar. That should undo it fairly easily.

Also turn the knob anticlockwise while turning the collar clockwise and they should part and loosen fairly easily
