Wind Noise above 80

As the subject header really. When above 80 the wind roar from the passenger side window on my 2000 LW is really quite loud, far louder then the drivers side. This is also accompanied by an annoying rattle that sounds like something is tapping against the glass within the door. The seal looks ok but something is up.

Is this a common problem? Is there an easy fix for this?

Have you tried pushing the lift button to see if the glass is fully up. If mine are not up I get the same symptoms, as the glass can move in its channel (rattling) and gets sucked away from the seal at high speed, hence the noise. Otherwise you may need to check the spacing of the door, as the seal may have shrunk/compressed meaning the door needs moving in a few millimetres.

Rattles and squeaks vary.... I'd get it checked out at the next service, unless it gets worse now...

But sfox is right about the window going all the way up, sometimes you let it down a little and then back up again fixes the rattle... but you could maybe have a loose pillar plate? is it stuck on solid or does it move a little when pushed?

Had the tapping sound on the passenger side and found the window had not married up to
the seal and was actually outside of it.

Fed it back when stationary and all has been fine since.

You really ought to make sure the passenger gets in before you take off.......

Sfox, SXS, the window is definately up all the way, in fact, if I drop the window so that there is a couple of mm gap between the rubber and the glass then the howling disapears??? The pillear plates have just been re-sealed, flat and don't move so I don't think it's these.

Graham, checked the seal and everything looks ok. Even had the girlfried pressing the glass to see if we could make it louder or quieter but no effect.

Gixxer, I'll let you know if I sort it out.

It's got to go back for a few things in the neaqr future so I'll see if they can look at it then.

Wow, you had your girl fried? What did she have to say about that?

Take the door panel off and have a look inside to see if anything looks wrong. There are about 10 small allen screws to remove.

This is whats in there.





I'd clean the connectors as well. Nothing to do with your problem, but worth doing.

Top photo! I'm not able to look at the car right now...where are the screws located? Is it a 5 minute job to take the door panel off?

Mine does it too on the passenger side.
I`m fairly convinced it`s the position of the rubber seal that`s attatched to the body.
The drivers side seems to be nearer to the lippy over bit rather than the edge of of the frame. Not very clear am i but it`s a toughy to explain without photies and i don`t know how to post em!Doh.

There are 8 allen screws.
2 in the dip on the top front of the door, 3 underneath and 3 on the rear of the door near the catch. Undo those and detach the cable connector inside and the inside door skin lifts right off.

dont know if its any help but the drivers side door/window on my chimaera was doing this badly over about 85mph. When I looked at the car directly from the front I could see that the leading edge of the passenger door was flush with the car whereas the drivers door was curved out slightly, hence at speed the wind was buffeting the door and making it howl and wobble with it to the point it was hard to make things out in the mirror. Re-allignment of the leading edge of the door is the only way to fix it.

trooper1212 is correct. 5 minute job to do. Clean the connectors whilst its off, as they can get corroded, and cause the door not to open etc...

Found the problem. When the passenger windiw is 'closed' it is about 10mm short of going all the way into the rubber at the top of the window. So even though there is no gap, there is not a complete seal. Can the window be adjusted to go up further? Is this mechanical or electronic?
