Ok,here's a probably useless vague description of what happened.

Every time I reached 2000 revs I started to get a quite loud metallic clanging knocking sound. It lasted until 2400 revs then goes away again. This happens in every gear between the same rev range.Doesn't happen when revs are dropping ,using no throttle.
It didn't matter if I used slight or hard acceleration, the sound was just more aggressive if I accelerated harder.
It's not coming from the engine, its definitely underneath prob mid to rear but hard to pinpoint.

It's similar to the knocking sound it makes if its stalling and the revs are just about to die.( but maybe its only mine that does that!).It's very noticeable & quite disconcerting.

She also seems to be labouring a bit at lower revs.On start up she has stalled a few times lately as well.Firing up ok but the revs die over 2-3 seconds & she stalls.I have to blip the throttle & catch it again before the revs drop to zero.

It may not be related but thought I'd throw it in.

Any ideas as I'm a numpty.

Cheers.

Is it the exhausts rattling against the chassis perhaps? Mine does it a little bit around the same sort of revs, though I wouldn't class mine as disconcerting - maybe the engine causes the most vibrations at that rev range?

ETA - Lovely car by the way.

That's what I'm hoping Rob.I was planning for a new system at the end of the month & if that's what it is I'll gladly live with it till then.Fingers crossed.

Have you grabbed the tailpipes and given them a shake? If you can hear a knocking sound then you've found the culprit.

Almost certainly exhaust on chassis given the throttle information you supplied. Is it worse on left or right hand bends too? Sometimes the chassis flex can make it worse/better.

You'll need to get it on a ramp and work out what's hitting where and how to sort it. When I put ACT manifolds on mine they clattered no matter what I did, until I had solid gearbox mount made (polybush rather than rubbeR) and it transformed the car into a nascar (all the vibrations rock!) and the hitting noise went away. Best upgrade ever biggrin

Had the same problem with mine when I first bought it... I have sport exhausts which were touching metal work underneath during your rev range and on bouncy roads.

Cheers guys.Usually when you post up you sit in dread. At least so far it seems positive coz fitting the new system should hopefully solve it.

Rob I will give my pipes a good pull in the morning.
Love the name Stu,did make me chuckle.

Thanks for the replies.

Well just an update: Wasn't the exhaust knocking.I am now at a stand blocking a main route into B'ham with no 1st or 2nd gear.:-(Will go into 3rd though. Well at least the recovery policy wasn't a waste of time!

Could you get 5th gear?

When you lost first and second did it just fail or go with a bang?

Bloody hell mate, really sorry about that! Times are tough for us lot on the Cerbera forum at the moment. Let's hope you get the car back to full health very soon. Might be something simple, stay positive.

Looks like used T5s go for about £550, not then end of the world in the grand scheme of things. I would expect the box repair to be more expensive, as new gearsets aren't cheap.

Thinking it may be just the exhaust rattling ,with my expert technical knowledge,I thought I'd give it a few beans to rattle it back into place. Was doing just over 4,000 revs &changed gear, think 3rd to 4th,it went in but went really limp.Pulling up at the lights I put it into 2nd which it did eventually, but very limply.Once stopped couldn't get 1st or 2nd but would go into 3rd.

By the time rescue came I could get it into 2nd & drive it up the ramp.Once I got home & off the truck it was still the same- no 1st,but could use 2nd & also reverse. Not sure about 5th.Tried the box through the gears but 5th wasn't obviously in.

It didn't go with a bang, just incredibly limp .Clutch pedal felt the same. The gearstick gaitor surround came out though.Gearstick just wobbles everywhere.
My usual garages are all on holiday so she's back at home poor gal.

When I say the clutch pedal feels the same I don't mean limp.It feels normal. Didn't mean to post twice ,sorry.

When my 3rd gear went it frightened the life out of me. as you know you sit right next to the gear box, so imagine the sound of of a lump of metal banging around inside the box at 4000 RPM, not nice. I'm surprised your's just went 'limp' (what about the Gear lever haha). If the Gear lever is all wobbly, and the Gear surround gaitor popped out, then have a look at the gear lever and see if that is still bolted securely to the shaft, they have been known to come loose.
Fingers crossed it vould be nothing worse than that.

APM Andy rebuilt mine - about a £1000 - ouch!

Did you check by pulling, kicking or wobbling the exhaust to see if the noise was that? Which even though your box has gone west the noise could still be unrelated.

Fifth gear can be lost when things go slightly iffy with the box but yours sounds more like your leaver has come free and not moving the cogs, rods and other bits in the box to the right place.

When a box goes you will know about it as it smashes things all over the place and you get a jigsaw when you open it up.

So does your shaft ( hehe ) move up and down and round and around with your foot off your clutch?

RIGHT.That's the last time I use the word "limp" in a post. You lot have seen far too many Carry On films & read too much Viz! biglaugh

There definitely were no panic inducing bangs &crashes, which is good.Just a lot of "WTF is going on here then?!" So it may well be the shaft( rolleyes ) which is good.

I did pull my pipes(here we go again fnaar fnaar) but they seemed pretty solid tbh (not limp anyway).Who knows what is going on under there!
I've got a couple of weeks off coming up so will put her up on axle stands & confirm my lack of mechanical knowledge.

Be prepared for a fortnight of" what's that round thing called" & "where's that then" with a few "what does it look like" thrown in for good measure.

Carry On Smiling.
