Intermittent poor brake problem solved

I've not posted on here for some time so I thought I'd share this little experience in case it's of help to someone else. For the last few months I've had intermittent poor brakes, always good when braking on the gears but if you brake immediately after having power on, about 1 in 20 times, it felt like there was little or no servo assistance. Brown trouser stuff the first time it happens and thereafter more beige as you half know it might happen...
As there is always a good vacuum on the overrun and the problem has never happened under these conditions I suspected the non-return valve in the vacuum feed. Anyway, I changed the valve today and the brakes are improved under all conditions and can't be provoked into the problem after a few miles of trying. I've just tried blowing through the old valve and at low pressure it lets air through both ways, only shutting if you blow damn hard so I'm confident the problem is fixed.
As mine is a highish mileage (73k) '98 model I suspect this could be a problem lurking for a few others.
