Smell Of Petrol From The Oil ???

Hi all, yet more bloody problems.... after fixing a few of them recently i now have a new one..

I fixed a jammed butterfly shaft on the o/s a week ago, once everything was back together and the car was running i found an intermittent misfire on the n/s bank and the MIL light was on, then it went off and back on etc, but after the car running for a few mins the light went off and now only flashes on and off when you plant the throttle while driving.

I took the car for a quick run around the block (still with the intermittent misfire) and found the car running hotter than normal, was reaching 110 degrees at one point and this was on a dual carridgeway doing about 70/80 mph but the cooling fan dropped it back down to around 100 degrees my car normally sits at 80 - 90 degrees on a dual carridgeway.

After an inspection when back home everything seemed fine, but after removing the oil cap it smelt of petrol.....

is it possible the misfire if from over fueling and this is causing bore wash and the petrol is getting past the piston rings into the oil which is where the smell is coming from and maybe igniting in the oil which is making it run hot ????

Totally stumped with this one, don't think its head gasket, no sludge in oil, extra pressure in the water system or smoke from the exhausts.....

I would 'guess' at the fuel leaking past the rigs and diluting the oil. Some combustion gases are ok, and as long as it’s not a prolonged misfire then your oil should be ok. It’s always a sign when the car makes oil i.e the oil level increases over time, when actually it is just being diluted with petrol.

I would get the miss sorted out asap, change the oil and fill exactly to the max mark. Then monitor the condition of the oil over a week or two driving.

Bud dont drive it.it is over fueling and the petrol will get in the oil and can do big damage.this could be any number of things ie injector gone down etc.you will have to change oil,and make sure you dont get bore wash from fuel.im only saying this because i had an engine let go at speed due to overfueling.

Hi guys, took the car apart last night in found that on pot 7 the was a faint seepage mark running from the injector hole down below the butterfly, there is also what looks like black carbon burns around the butterfly.... there is no damage, it will clean up.... also the spark plug from pot 7 looks like it has been getting washed as there was no carbon build up like the others around the igniter part of the plug....

I'm hoping this is the cause of the misfire... i smelt the oil again and there was no smell of petrol anymore...

i can get an injector from Racing Green TVR for £55 plus postage, the number on my injector is "D1720CE" i've rang Lucas direct, a nice guy called Paul tried but can't cross referance this for me as it's not on their reccords somehow ????? does anyone know what the new part number might be so i can try source one locally ?? they are the same as the "Tuscan S" injectors, according to TVR Power....

Good one bud,change your oil when its done because the fuel breaks it down.also if she has let a lot of fuel in you may find oil level will now be to high

It was my fault i never got back to him about them, i was going to wait till he was back from his holiday to discuss them but other problems with the car pushed them to the back of my mind... but i only needed 1 anyway and he wanted to sell all 8 as a set.... i only last week got the car running again off a previous problem....

Thanks Gazzab, have just given in and purchased one from Racing Green, i've tried everyone i know to sorce one locally but failed......

When i remove the injector in question from the rail, is it under pressure ??? does it just pull out like it does from the throttle body ???

Going to attempt it tomorrow if the parts turn up...

From memory, yup they just pull out, grab a set of seals for either end of the injectors, when I changed mine the seals were very worn and also tore a couple putting the injectors back in.

Hi Nigel, are the top seals the same size as the bottom ??? if so i have a few spares from when i replaced all the bottom ones...

Nigel, luckily for me the new injector came with a new seal top and bottom.... they do look the same size......

Hi guys..... after fitting the new injector it had not made a difference to the intremittent misfire, i then in turn replaced the old injector and moved the new one down the line till all 4 were done, and this had no effect....

When the car is running there is a very strong smell of petrol coming from the left side exhaust as well as from the oil, there is the odd small pop and bang too....

What can this be ????

i'm thinking next doing the plug leads then the coil pack (i've just put new plugs in).

are all plugs firing?did you change the oil as suggested.The bank that smells of fuel will be the one with a plug problem .Basically you are chucking in fuel and it aint igniting

Hi mate, all plugs are firing but how well i don't know..... i'm only saying this as it's not a constant misfire, whichever one it is must be firing but wether its because of a weak spark or a faulty lead why it's hicking and farting i just don't know, these are the only things left i can think of trying.... well, unless its the head gasket or piston rings :-(

Oil has been changed but just used a cheaper alternative till i find the problem then will put in the good stuff :-)

Hi Craig,
Why not try swapping over the coil pack and leads from the other bank which are known to be good just for diagnostic purposes?

Take out all plugs on the bad bank,there will be one or two that will be wet on the tips if she aint firing right.this will narrow down your search.try leads then i would swap coil packs and see if the trouble jumps sides.
