Rear Brake Pad Rattle - Please Help!

Really after some advice re. the above.

Recently fitted a new set of rear pads and I've started to get a really annoying rattle / knocking from the offside

It appears that the pads are loose when in the calliper and rattle or knock about when no brake pressure is applied. The rattle disappears as soon as I put any pressure on the brake pedal. The pistons are not seized.

I have tried copper-slip, silicone sealant all to no avail. I have had to very slightly re shape the friction material on both sides as the the lip on the inside of the disk was causing a very small lip to appear on the pad.

So what can it be?

What role do the springs play?

Please help as I'm sick to death of taking the brakes to bit to resolve this.

How old are your disks. I had this and tried everything you have, then when we changed the disk we found that about 1/3 of the fins between the 2 disks had fratcured. So the disks had spread apart slightly, which was causing the rattle.

Interesting I have exactly the same disks and pads (red stuff) probably 5000 ish miles old. I just got in from fitting new brake pipes this eve so have the offending caliper off (near side for me)

I also have a lip on top edge of pad so was guessing that this was the cause and was just going to remove the lip hoping for a cure....

I also wondered if it was a slightly warped disk causing a larger than normal gap between pad and disk.

Will post here if/when I find a cure.

Get some self adhesive rubber backed anti-squeal shims from fleabay. Stick them to the back of the pads and let them bed in a while so the pistons grab into the backing and they will rattle no more. Well at least mine didn't!

Have ordered some 3M anti squeal shims - the same material as I fitted on the front.

I'll have a look at the disks also when I have it in bits

The little springs push the pads apart and away from the discs.

When the springs broke on mine the pads rattled.

Any cheap springs that fit and are in or around the right strength should do the job.

Good point - the springs appear to slide inside the holes in the pads making them err not very springy!

Was thinking of using washers between the pad and spring to stop them sliding inside the pads.

I had the same problem on my Cerb ... I put heavier springs on the pins that goes trough the pads and caliper .
problem is solved and still brakes like it should do .
the original springs are to small and not strong enough !

As said this is really old and and an easy fix, the problem is that the holes in the pads are bigger than the split pin holding the pads in place so they jump up and down causing them to rattle and knock that is why when you apply pressure to the pedal they stop rattling, so to stop this put silicone (heat resistant) to back of the pads then push the brake pedal down so the piston pushes agaisnt the pads and put somethning heavy on the the pedal or a stick to hold the pedal down and leave for a couple of hours, that should do the trick

Wish I'd read this before fitting new pads. The old springs got trapped and deformed so I dumped them - Big Mistake. The pads were making more noise than the engine for 500 miles, with no time to find and fit replacement springs.

Same issue, new springs, plus anti squeal shims, still doing it! So i have used some exhaust silicone to stick the pads to the pistons. Car is off the road at the moment so not sure if it's fixed it, though i'd give in at least 12 hours to go off properly.

I found that silicone fixed it fine - for about 50 miles.

I use this for squeals on my other car, works brilliantly. Not sure it would cope with rattles though.

Folks, forget all the complicated / expensive options ..... this sorts it.

I ended up fitting M4 washers at each the end of the springs to stop them sliding inside the pad

I also fitted the anti rattle pads. BTW the 3M stuff is dirt cheap on ebay....

No probs since!

Had this problem with mine. Anti squeal shims from clever trevor have finally sorted it (hopefully!).

Brilliant, rattle banished. But I can't get rid of the squeal, even the CRC spray that has always worked for me before has made virtually no difference. Not happy.
