Mine has similar symptoms, although not quite as excessive!

The very early 4.2 Cerbs seem to be a lot looser than the later 4.2s. It makes them very quick indeed, however will mean a lot of oil usage, particulary when the piston rings start to get on a bit. I'd get it checked out, but I wouldn't be suprised if the diagnosis is new piston rings to stop the oil usage.

However, If using oil is your only problem and you have no blue smoke on hard acceleration, then your leak might be larger than you realise?

Mine uses about 1.5 litres every 1000 miles, I think. I'll have to take more notice next time I fill it up to tell for sure.
If your usage was closer to mine I'd say not to worry, but as it is so high then get it checked out with a local specialist.

Mine is using a bit at the moment, probably 1l every 7-800 miles or so. I know that one of the banks gives a little puff of smoke when I push hard. However it is not getting worse and I have a feeling that the dipstick markings are wrong so I might always have it a little overful (it had a new sump).

I wouldn't be too worried (although i was originally), as cerbs can use a lot of oil. 1000 miles per litrte is regarded as the norm, but some use more, and some less. Mine is using 1L per 500/600 miles.A lot of my driving is in town though, so that doesn't help either.

One thing I did notice on mine, is the difference between the upper mark and the lower mark on the dipstick, is ONE litre...not two, which I think is the norm. Thats why I was worrying originally, thinking it was doing only half the mileage.

Iam a little more relaxed now, I going to do a proper check of the oil and double check the milage over the next 500 or so and make sure I've got the amount right. A few things are stacking up - I also do a lot of slow milage to and from work in Manchester, and I guess the fact Iam still awaiting new cams from TVR wont help - will it??? The reading may be out a little on the stick also so I may have slightly overfilled + the leak . Do you guys check from cold or after a few mins of it standing after a journey?? SFR mentioned the O rings thing but it doesn't seem to smoke that much to indicate they're that far gone and with only 30K???

Check it cold.

Try using a thicker oil...thats if you are using the thin stuff.(mobil 1 0/40). It will help slightly.

Walldonway no longer use Mobil & now use Castrol RS 10w60. It's thicker & they have noticed Cerbs do use less oil running with it. We've only been to Le Mans & back since the service, so can't really comment yet on average useage ! But I'll keep an eye on it & post my finding here..... (was using Mobil 1 0W40 up until now....)

Bear in mind that just because it uses less doesnt mean that the Castrol is better for your engine, it just saves you the bother of checking as frequently.

Used 1 litre (Mobil) in 1200 miles hard driving to LM and would have expected to do so.

Sorry, I wasn't implying that was any better, just repeating what Walldonway told me (apparantly the Rover engined cars run smoother with the thicker oil ?).

I added 500ml of oil when we got to Le Mans (400 miles after the service). I've not checked it since we got back, as the car hasn't been driven yet. But 500ml in 400 miles is MORE oil that Mobil used to be - hence I think I'll keep an eye on it !

Don't worry to much as most engines run on synthetic oil will drink it but get the leak fixed
