Hi All,

Well, after a good wee while lurking around here, trying to glean as much info as possible, and getting a real taste for these cars through my 21 year old son and his 4.5 Cerb, finally took the plunge and picked mine up a week past Saturday..
For those interested Ive included a pic.
Purchased from a PH forum member its a 07/1999 4.2, 64000 miles although having had a "TVR Power"
rebuild approx 12000 miles ago.
Had a enjoyable, albeit wet, 200 mile journey home.
Pulls well, stops well and so far all electrics work !!
Couple of immediate issues - what appears to be nearside rear brakes making a right rattle when driving which dissappears when you step on the brake pedal.
Found out there should be springs on the retaining pins which attempt to keep the pads off the disc aswell as stop any rattles.
Have replaced these already and all appears well.
Small leak from diff - appears to be coming from the offside driveshaft seal - a bit damp around there.
Couple of knocks evident on rough roads/bumps.Checked exhaust for body fouling but nothing there.
Bushes maybe? Any other places to look - the knocks are quite obvious.
Portland grey interior needed a wee clean but otherwise pretty good condition.
Have already replaced the 2 door seals as there was evidence of a little water ingress in both footwells - they weren`t sealing well at all in a few spots round the frames.
Came with 2 brand new cats on the new stainless sports system and my wife liked the way it sounded, "Quieter" and "not as loud as Michaels".frown
Well, soon put paid to that at the weekend and put on the decats supplied with the car biggrin.

Picked mine up Sunday so also very new to the Cerb I seem to be suffering a very similar knocking noise usually on turning so I'll be watching your post, good luck with the new toy

Welcome to the madhouse!

The knock (if it sound as if it is coming from the rear seat area) may well be a diff mounting bush - usualy the top one.

Thanks for that.
It does sound like its coming from below/behind the rear seats.
The local TVR specialist pointed me in that direction also and as of now have only managed to have a wee squint at them - at first hand they appear ok but will get in about them asap.

Must say though, one of the first things I considered doing was getting the wheels done - Anthracite or Matt black.
Had a look at yours just there and Im still swaying - it does look more menacing, IMO, if thats possible.

You won't be able to see the top bush easily without getting right underneath and possibly removing the back box. Sods Law dictates that it is most likely to be the top bush, I fear!

It's coming from the rear end sounds as if it could also be the diff bush, how time consuming is it to replace?

The bottom two diff bushes are straightforward. You can get the brackets off and press the old bushes out.

The top bush housing is part of the chassis so you have to drop the diff then remove old bush in situ. If a press type bush puller doesn't work (and it often doesn't) this variously involves fire, saws, chisels, big iron bars and sledgehammers. The most successful method I found was a chisel ended long bar through the wheelarch and a 28lb sledgehammer.

Replacing the diff bushes with poly ones means that at least it will be easy to get out if you ever need to change it again.

Being the heavy handed idiot I am I can see this going horribly wrong ! thanks for the advice I'll source the bushes and have a crack at it .....

Just make sure that the iron bar is long enough that if you miss you don't hit the rear wing with the sledgehammer.

Hi,
you say the exhaust is not fauling on the body but have you checked to see if the exhaust back boxes are knocking on the ends of the box section parts of the chassis?
Could also be the anti-roll bar drop links catching on the body, there is not that clearance.

Thanks for the pointers.
Pretty sure the 2 back boxes are not knocking off the chassis.
Have been under it, whilst putting the decats on, and was giving the system a damn good shake and couldn`t find a knocking anywhere.
The anti-roll bar links are something I will investigate.
When you say there`s not much clearance is this normal or is it liable to be due to a worn component.
