Is It The Door Sensor
Discussion
Hi,
Not been able to drive my Cerbera (or anything) since the end of April, all being well I should be able to drive on the 25th November...so I need to get my Cerbera MOT'd (need someone to drive it to the centre and to the NEC) through lack of use it has developed a niggle.
For a start it would lock ...then I noticed the passenger door window would not completely close
...either when you tried it on the dash button or when you try to alarm the car
It opens and closes, the mirror switch button pops the door open....but as the window stops with about 3ins gap at the top ...it doesn't need to drop down as in effect it is stuck in a position that it would drop to if the door open button had been used (hope this makes sense)
The drivers side window works fine, goes all the way up when the door is closed drops down when the "open" mirror button used. but will not work on locking.
So here we go...
1. Does the car not lock because the door ecu thinks the passenger door is open...due to the window being stuck in the open phase position (bare in mind the window will go all the way down, in either open or closed mode)
2. Is it likely to be the magnetic proximity switch failing?
3. Is this a common problem?
So I decided to do some exploring...and checking thought the wires to the proximity switch might have failed...so got on me knees and held a magnet against the switch...making it think the door was closed (against the one in the body door sill) tried to close the window on the dash button - nothing, no movement.Although the window would go down.
So undid the two retaining self tappers...wound out the steel switch with wires attached...firstly both wires are blue on mine...not very helpful
, but after removing the door card and speaker bin (to gain access and check connections) I saw that both blue wires were attached independently to a black wire and white/black wire...checked connectors they seem fine...connected / reconnected them nothing..BUT..then when I disconnected one of them (think the white / blue the window went up to what was in effect was the closed position.
No matter what I do with the magnet and proxity switch nothing happens..
Q:
Why would disconnecting the switch make the window go to the closed position...surely breaking the circuit would drop the window as it would think it had been opened?
And now that the window fully up you can now lock and unlock the car off the key fob...
so does the ECU now think the door is closed and we can now lock up?
And in this position with the window now fully up, when you press the door open button the window drops down as per "normal", but will then not go back up no matter what you do with the magnet and the door proximity switch relationship, or on the dash button, with or without the magnet / proximity switch touching or open....
BUT when you break the proximity switch connection the window goes to the door closed fully up position.
Wow that was a fair old post...
And yes I have disconnected the Door locking ECU in the boot / tried another unit (which just locked the car (why?) so leaves it open the other closes it!
And yes I have disconnected the battery and reconnected it leaving for 12 hours in between....
God knows how many fault codes my ECU, it's right what they say the don't like standing...
I did have a battery drain prior to me attention seeking dying episode in April, I am sure I remember talking Carl Bakers and Loz Hemmings (onsloz)advice and disconnected the siren and wiper motor.big causes of fire
..did the trick stopped drain...I reconnected the wiper motor last week...still no drain so must be the alarm siren
Hope this makes sense,
What do we do when proximity switch playing up?
Do they go...parts man at TVRPower said he can't recall one being sold for an age...so might be wide of the mark as the wires seem fine
Thanks in advance

Go into the boot, lift the flap at the top of boot, you will see control boxes, 2nd from the right (on mine) is the "window control box" unplug the larger(wider) plug then refit it & the window should reset ! HTH
Ahh if it were so simple...look at the bottom of me rambling post...that's the first thing I did...even swapped the box for a spare I had...Thanks for the reply...hence the head scratch

..... Nope,not an effin clue!
I think you have a thing for loose wires!
Hope your day surgery all went well.
Best wishes with both,
Dave ,Mandy & the boys.(the newbies)
No worries...I'm pretty much there...hence posting on here

Your not "newbies" just new mates

look forward to seeing you all soon

It sounds like the window position switch is dead to me.
Sorry lost on me ..never heard of that..where is it...it's not what I am calling the proximity sensor that sits at the bottom of the door and connects with the magnet when the door is closed it it?They are bog standard long arm microswitches available from Maplins etc for about 3 quid. There are also a bunch of connectors inside the doors - they tend to get damp and corrode. I permanently cured all my window and door problems by replacing every connector with waterproof ones.

Obviously can't drink due to medical reasons...
However I'd never be so rude as to refuse hospitality

Anyway shame you can't get over to Meriden for the WWM Christmas do...but make sure you grab me on the NEC Stand for the Classic car show...it will be good...although not as big as next years show we are going upwards
with a four post domestic lift....and the CERBERA Speed 12...
...we are really looking forward to it ...join us on the stand next year....will be goodPoleDriver said:
I had the same problem, changed the proximity sensor (the door closed one) and all worked well!
Thanks Karl,Did the same thing this evening ...as you predicted ll working well...thanks for the input.....love your cerb by the way...isn't the one sourced from Cornwall? A sweet car by all accounts.
Ran with this car in the past if so...Gizzer's motor?
Excuse me if I am wrong....

No - if you take the door card off, there is a microswitch under the window glass at the front edge of the door that tells the control box when to stop the window drop. If that (or the wiring to it) fails the control box can get very confused.

On mine the problem was the arm had fallen off the microswitch, fortunately I found it in the debris at the bottom of the door. I wish I'd fixed this months ago. They are bog standard long arm microswitches available from Maplins etc for about 3 quid. As you predicted the connectors have suffered too, although still working.
