Found the compressor is not kicking in with the aircon. I changed the outlet for the steel one so there is no gas(as had broken off). Would that make any difference to the electro magnet working and engaging the clutch? I can't see it. Cheers

I think the compressor wont kick in when its without gas.

Oh thats interesting, i just didn't want to re-gas it then find it still doesn't work, as it's about £40? The compressors are silly money.

Wot Gazzab said as i understand it the gas/lubricant needs to be present or damage will be caused to the compressor so no gas = no compressor running a decent re-gas place should be able to pressure test it before filling to check for leaks.

Yes - there's a switch that prevents the aircon kicking in if the pressure is too low, and also regulates the compressor when the pressure gets too high.... if your system is completely empty the thing wont work at all.....

The so-called trinary switch which keeps the compressor off is located on the receiver-drier which can be accessed by removing the LHS front wheel and removing the lower access panel (the one below the headilght one) an could be shorted temporarily to see if the compressor will cut in by following the wiring diagram in one of the links to the service manuals in the equivalent parts stickie.

The system should be pressure tested with oxygen-free nitrogen before charging it with refrigerant.
