Wiper arm detached

My driver's side wiper arm seems to have detached itself from the link to the motor. It doesn't move when the motor is running and can be moved freely by hand through its entire arc.

Any tips on how to get to the space where the mechanism is? It looks tricky to get into. And what I'm likely to find?

It will be more than likely that the wiper arm wheel boxes are gone. They are from a series 3 jag xj6. Take the scuttle panel off. And you will find another panel underneath that is secured by six self tapers. Remove that and that will give access to the wheel boxes and connecting rod.

It actually turned out to be simpler than that. The nut holding the wiper arm onto the thing that turns it had loosened and the arm had moved up enough to allow it to move freely from the mechanism. It seems to be OK now Ive tightened it back up

I had exactly the same issue on a Mk1 Golf Gti Cabrio I bought recently, as I went to leave the house it started raining so I put the wipers on but the drivers side didnt move. I stuck it back in the garage expecting to have to replace the linkage but when I went to remove the wiper arms found both arms were only bolted finger-tight to the spindles. Once done up tight, happy days!
