I've heard rumour of the M3 conversion. Not that I'd do it myself but has it really been accomplished and at what cost...
My 'experience' of engine transplants was an enquiry regarding sticking a 4.5 AJP V8 into a Griff. When I asked there was much chin rubbing and sucking in of air before 'that'd be seriously expensive' got muttered...

The M3 straight six goes in without to much trouble, a few converstions have been done.
The problem with the cerb is that the engine is mounted so far back and to make space for the feet in the footwells the chassis impinges on engine space. The AJPV8 is 75 degrees between cylinder bank centres, as such it is a fairly narrow angle. Any V8 (and thats most of them) that is over 75 degrees won't fit unless you start cutting away chassis and footwells.
So look after you're AJPV8's as the options for replacement are limited.
