took the cerb out for a spin and at 70 ish on the M56 dropped into 4th and started to put the go faster pedal down , heard a thump and the bonnet lifted !
pulled over and engaged neutral , engine revs fine with no change in oil pressure but when using 1st could hear a knocking noise.
picked up a very cold hour later by the RAC , no noise at all ?? and put the car onto transporter .
anybody got any ideas ? cars going to central tvr if they're open tomorrow or sometime next week.

Is it a noise from the engine,or has the sound travelled up from say the diff mounts?mine would clonk or knock sometimes on the motorway, when i checked the diff mount bushes one was fine, and two where completely shot. Its hard to diagnose without being there.Pray to the cerb gods its not from the enginefrown

don't think its the engine it came from the gearbox , also in neutral i can rev the engine without any noise.

Zuumed, I saw you on the hard shoulder at about 3.30pm this afternoon after a trip to Cheshire Oaks. If I knew anything about Cerbs I would have stopped but sadly I don't hope you get it fixed asap.

the RAC turned up just around that time , it was getting a bit chilly !!
it sounds as though something has worked it self loose.
can't really complain owned the car for about 5 months now and this is the only breakdown , it always starts and goes like nothing else i've ever owned.

the engine has wiped out the gearbox , lots of bits fell out !!!!!
central TVR have it and are going to sort the problem .
the gearbox mounts are going to be changed along with a dodgy diff mount , is it worth putting uprated bushes on the diff ? or is it a waste of time on these cars.

Definitely put poly bushes on the diff, particularly if someone else is taking out the old ones! If nothing else it makes changing the top bush a relatively simple job in future rather than a nightmare few hours with a sledgehammer and chisel!

The Quaife gearbox comes highly recommended. Much stronger gears in the same housing. As used by the Tuscan racers who flat shift at full throttle. APM did mine and I'm glad I spent the money on the upgrade.

How much for this as a gear box rebuild is on the cards some time this year?

going to fit the poly bushes and the rebuild cost is around £500 by TVR power.

IIRC around the £1500 mark including everything ie fitting, vat, oil, etc, although the AA warranty paid £475 of that smile

finally get the cerbera back from central this Friday , rebuilt gearbox from TVR power along with a new clutch ( it would seem 5th gear letting go at 70 odd wiped out the clutch !! )Total bill £2600 this included 2 centre pipes for the 'after market stainless steel exhaust' (they where rotten) and the fitting of uprated bushes to the diff.
only had the car since august last year ( px'd V8 dax rush for it ) it came with all the good things you'd wish to hear , full TVR service history until they went bust , then TVR specialists and more money spent on it than it originally cost !

so not particularly chuffed with TVR ownership at the moment ( I know there not cheap to run and have ' issues ') but the 'bullet proof' gearbox has put me off somewhat , now worried if the 'bullet proof' engine is about to chuck its toys out of the pram as well.

Porsche ownership has never looked so good!!

On a more serious note what does a good rebuild of the engine cost (not interested in upgrading for more power) it’s either put money aside for that and hope nothing happens or get a 911 turbo.

Bullet proof? Hmmm
A rebuild isn't cheap, engine in and out is expensive and then you'll always find other stuff to attend to eg rusty chassis, heat shield, water pipes etc... So £4 - 7k probably.
Find yourself a cerb indie and save money - if your in the south andy at Apm is top draw.

bullet proof as a good deal of the online reviews seem to say on the 4.5 along with looking on here , lots of horror stories about the speed six and 4.2 though.

only reason i bought one was because of the engines reputation for reliability , i can live with the dodgy electrics ( although mine hasn't shown any of the problems i've seen on here), the car lives outside on a battery charger and so far has never failed to start.

i'll be thinking long and hard about keeping it or not.

Is your engine messing about or OK? If it's OK I would try and just enjoy the car & forget about what might happen. At the end of the day, you could fork out for a 911 & then have something blow up on that which I expect would be a lot more expensive to sort out!

FYI - I had an APM top end rebuild on mine a couple of years back due to worn valve guides. Was about 4k. Car symptoms were: using lots of oil, lacking/losing power at higher revs, starting to missfire.

Rrebuilds can vary in cost, Gazzab has already mentioned that once the engine is out that other things will need replacing. My SP6 rebuild has £5.5k but final bill from TVR Power was just under £8k for a standard build once I had replaced the clutch, hoses, engine mounts, and uprated a few internals etc, etc. I think if you are looking at getting a rebuild I would add on another few grand for extras. But once rebuilt the 4.2, 4.5 and SP6 are very very reliable.

Unfortunately "old" porsches break too, and a gearbox rebuild and new clutch on an old equivalent age 996 would i expect cost considerably more from a porsche indi. These things just happen, the gearboxes do not normally fail on our cars, but the clutches do and maybe the issue was there if the clutch was dragging or something. I too sometimes worry about about the what ifs and my cerb has an engine made of chocolate, but its been rebuilt and is fine....at the moment smile

I will say from my experiences that what ever car make you have they all cost a fortune to run and maintain if you add a smidge of performance:DMy old scooby cost me ££££££££££££££ from the word go,and i had her 10 years.my bills were far bigger than any mentioned here.Having said this engine rebuilds always get dearer cos we always have those little extras done that the garage recommend....and they add up.My example would be a 2.5 conversion being quoted at 3.5k fitted, final bill 9k.:DYou just gotta smile.
