Annoying metallic flapping noise.

Hi folks, hope you all enjoyed your respective New Years.
My initial thoughts were that it was the flapping I've heard discussed when the heaters are turned on. This doesn't seem to be the case. There's no particular scenario I can set up in the car which ensures that the noise appears or disappears as a rule. Today I thought I noticed it more when the windows were down.
Basically its a metallic sounding flapping/tinging noise (similar to the initial noise you get when you turn on the fans), which is almost completely random in its behaviour. It sounds like its coming from behind the driver's seat, can't tell for certain whether its coming from the interior or exterior. Everything looks fine underneath, and I don't think there's anything loose under there. The flapping can be quite regular on a completely flat and smooth road and then shut up all together on the bumpy stuff, so guessing its not mechanical.
Bit of a difficult one to describe really but its starting to drive me up the wall and I'm sure someone on the forum will have experienced something similar.
On another note, there's also the tiniest of whines coming from the car at about 3000rpm. It really needs a sharp ear to detect (which Cerbera owners seem to develop with time
) and seems to be slightly more noticeable when coming off the throttle and the revs die down.

Exhaust was my first check Mick, and almost certain its not the culprit. My backbox is a linked sports one and solid as a rock, couldn't detect any clunks upon a rigorous shake of the pipes.
Interesting thought there Harry, I hadn't noticed a correlation between braking and the noise disappearing so I'll try that next time it happens.
