What Diff is this?

Unsure if this is a Hydra track i have been told by previous owner it is but after looking at spongys 4.5 diff mine looks slightly different. If i spin it as it stands just now both turn in the same direction. It drives fine and felt good on the track just looking for the correct Oil to fill it with and does any one know if you can buy a Gasket for it or is it a case of make my own?

My car is a 99 4.2 if this helps.

Looks like a BTR 'cone' differential to me

Oh, and you don't use a gasket, you use a thin bead of oil resistant RTV silicone and bolt the cover down when it is wet

It Does say BTR on the bottom of the casing , But so does spongys and his is a Hydra track

I have never been a fan of these sealants, a Gasket is 100% better In my opinion is there any reason why you should not use one for this application?

The rtv sealant is brilliant. Sealed my diff up and not one sign of a leak. Just used more of the stuff on my jeep when I done the diff's and gearbox filters. the stuff I used was mopar stuff but that was more due to it being at hand at the time.

The BTR casing can accomodate a cone, hydratrak, Titan plate or Quaife ATB differential, amongst others.

TVR used the BTR cone and BTR hydratrak diffs, the latter being an extra cost item. The diff itself in yours (as opposed to the crown wheel it is bolted to) looks identical to a cone diff of mine, although I confess I don't know whether there are any visual differences between a cone and a hydratrak differential (I would expect them to look different).

There is nothing wrong with the sealant method - that is how the units are supplied. The mating faces are quite wide to give a good seal.

I use Silkolene LSD oil in mine, simply because Driftworks are handy to me and thats what they stock.

Hydratrak diff was on the options list for the 4.2

Mines got Hydratrak fitted, 4.2 , 97 car

Sorry for the simpleton question here but that means it is a non Hydra track unit? lol

I really no nothing about Diffs just what there purpose is.

If they came with no gasket then i may as well just seal it. I just like Gaskets nice and clean that's all.

Why is the hyra trak worse than the cone diff ?
