Hi all

It looks like the crank sensor is causing the car to not start after fitting the new engine, couple of questions if I may.

1). Do the 4.5 and 4.2 use the same crank sensors?
2). What do the crank sensors get the signal from/what needs to be cleaned?
3). Any tips?

The car turns over but sends no signal to the ECU to fire the coil packs or injectors.

Cheers in advance!

Hi

To the best of my knowledge:

1)The crank sensors are the same - Crankshaft sensor Part No TVR T45E 151R
2)The proximity sensor (Crankshaft sensor) picks up the castellations off the flywheel (see pics), for every peak or trough a pulse will be sent back to the ECU.
3)The sensor can attract dust and metallic debris as the clutch wears, as the sensors are relatively sensitive components they need to be kept clean.

I think Steve Heath does a Virtual Crank Sensor box, could be useful.

If your car has the early type of engine wiring loom, there is a join just under the expansion tank (another excellent TVR design feature). I had a problem where the connection was getting damp produced a crank sensor fault stopping the engine starting. Worth checking first. I ended up replacing the engine harness with a newer one without the join as it caused various weird problems.

Had this problem with mine just after I bought it - no spark, however, my injectors were firing. As Rufus says, the sensors do pick up alot of crap so I cleaned mine but it made no difference. Ordered a Replacement and Bob's you Auntie's live-in lover. Car hasn't missed a beat since. Good luckthumbup

Mine turned out to be a crank sensor loom issue (a break in it) but it was what caused mine to have the same symptoms as yours.

Relatively easy to replace or even remove and clean the crank sensor so give it a go.

What main stream car is the sensor also used on so I know what to ask for when mine fails?
