Anyone know what the thermostat is from in a Cerb ?

Our car is running very cold at the moment (50-60 in normal driving), but gets up to normal temps (90ish) once you hit traffic.

So I'm hoping it's just the thermostat has stuck open, so the water is constantly cooling..... ????

(I've not even bothered to look yet, but anyone know how easy it is to replace, and even where the water pump is on a Cerb (I presume the thermostat is in the water pump ?))

I had this for a while and it was the gauge that had gone, or more specifically the capillary tube.

If it is that, good luck in getting one, I've been waiting 3 months now

I did wonder that, but if you sit on the drive with engine running (annoying the h3ll out of the neighbours ) it gets up to what I'd call normal temps (90ish), and the fans kick in shortly afterwards.....

I figured replacing the thermostat should be a fairly easy process & doesn't cost the eath if it turn out not to be that thats causing the problems.....

It's a special. About 45-50 quid from TVR as the stat is built into an external housing. It is a three way unit not the common two way one fitted into the engine. Cooling system will require draining and some of the pipework will need disassembling. Pretty reliable usually. Worth removing and testing in hot water first though before parting with the goods. While you are at it check the steel water pipes haven't rotted.

Looks like I'll have the Cerb in pieces this weekend then (much better I spend time testing it than the dealer !)

Thanks Steve ! (where is the stat, reading previous threads it says the front of the engine)

Under the front engine cover amongst all the other pipework on the passenger side.

3.5 months later ! (and having only done about 500 miles) I finally got round to investigating the thermostat this weekend.

After untangling all the pipe work from round the chassis, it came out without too many problems.

Into a pan of warm water & bring to the boil & stat is working fine.

Put car back together, swore at leaking hoses, fixed leaking hoses, pressureised & bled system & went for a gentle drive.....

And it's still only getting to 70-80ish sitting in traffic, and drops to 50 as soon as the speed pics up ! Once home & sitting on drive with engine running the fan/s are kicking in at about 55-60 !

Any suggestions ? Does this just sound like a duff sender that confusing the ECU ?

Olly, bring your motor round to mine and we can plug the ol' laptop in and see if the gauge is telling fibs. Sounds like it to me.

Mechanical gauge and capillary tube. You need a new one

Think I'll test the sensor 1st (thanks Jo - will mail you off list to arrange a time).

I hope to g*d it's not the capillary tube ! I know the trouble you've had/got trying to get hold of one ! (although the outside doesn't look too bad.....)

I'd be extremely suprised if the ECU sensor was shafted, and I found not having a gauge to watch liberating

It'll just be a dodgy gauge and nothing to worry about, you could always remove yours and get it refurbished at Caerbont if they won't supply you a new one.

Ok, finally got the ECU plugged into a laptop last night & lo & behold the ECU is reading the correct temp, and fan kicking in when they are supposed to !

Not sure if I'm pleased or annoyed.....

So the guage is reading approx 30-40 degrees too cold, but I've also noticed (now that it's got colder) that the hot air that comes out the vents isn't hot ! It's slightly warmer than the cold air, but it's certainly not hot air ! Could this be related to the water temp gague not working, or just a co-incidence ?
I think it might be time to find the heater matrix in the passenger footwell !

Theromstat is in the left front wheel arch just behind the frame, attached to the body with some structual twist ties .

Three pipes easy to remove. I have a ramp, if your in the vicinity and need the help.

Always happy to support a 'do it yourselfer'. I live in Ash Kent, so not very far.

Unsurprisingly and contrary to popular belief the cerbera thermostat *isn't* a tvr special, can be had in std temp or lower 78 deg temp for the racing boys ... but is expensive at 35 pounds plus vat and carriage..
