Try a search as its depths that are key.

Standard sizes are 6.5" fronts and 4" rears, but as Gazzab says, depth is critical unless you are building custom enclosures.

I've been looking into this as well. There's a few topics on it already. Existing fronts are apex 45mm deep but it appears people have got away with slightly deeper ones without custom enclosures. Best bet would be to take a speaker out and measure the hole. Looks like the diameter is less than usual for a typical 6.5" speaker too. But if its not sitting flush might be OK...

Fusion speakers do a direct replacement! They are very shallow and much better than the original pioneer units

I take it you mean these?

Looks like a perfect fit as you say. What's the quality like compared to other replacement units?

Looks like these classy units would fit too.

They look like the ones! They are much better than the standard ones, but i have the standard pioneer radio still so all sounds crap, but were a lot better than the standard pioneers, it could be they were worn out as they are the age of the car 15 years old! The Jvc grills do look a little "MAX POWER".

does anyone know what size sub fits snug in the helmet shelf bit?
I enjoy music when driving (not that you can really hear much with the exhaust) but I was thinking of puttin a sub in there, any recomendations?

I just replaced my sub, the old one was shot when i got the car. The opening in mine is to suit an 8" but I think some people have fitted 10" ones which is the max you can go.
I went with an alpine s range which was more because of how simple it looked, as you say you don't get much benefit when you are on the move!

I always thought the front speakers were 4.5 litres and the rears twin 3".

They certainly make the best sound biglaugh
