Discs have appeared to have warped again (3rd time in 18,000 miles) on my 4.2. I seem to recall that there was an upgrade that could be undertaken to the bigger front discs of the 4.5. Anybody done this, whats involved?

While we are about it, who is running what regarding pads nowadays, any recommendations please chaps.

Thanks

To be on your third set in that time there must be another problem, are you calipers working okay, no sticking pistons?

I have the AP 330x28mm discs with the 4.5 calipers and Pagid RS28 pads, local Indie commented on how they nearly went through the windscreen when taking it out for a test drive after a service.biggrin

She dont half stop well now, can lock the fronts at will, even on hot semi slicks and have really good pedal feel.

I had the same setup on my early Tuscan and did the swap to 322 discs. Do your calipers have 4 or 6 bolts clamping them together, as I recently learned on here that you can determine the disc size that the calipers can handle from this.

Are you sure it's warping and not pad material building up on the discs?

Racing Green are doing new 322m/m discs for a good price, recommend EBC red stuff for fast road use,i had Mintex in previously and they were too hard for road use,i couldn`t stop them squealing.

Have RG actually got any? They have been talking about these discs since before the TAG 11 event. I gave up calling in October, and being told 'they'll be in soon'.

I had the drag link bushes done as I thought the disks had warped.
What a difference! Saved me a fortune

Have you actually checked the run out with a dial gauge? If not it is more likely to be front lower drag strut bush or possibly even pads than a disk warp.

Here's a link to my story with replacing discs. In it you'll find that Mad Mark found an indie supplier for his problem.

Hi Al,

Have you got bells fitted?

I ask as I am running tuscan s cross drilled at the moment, they are fine, but also have a set of bells which could do with some new cross-drilled discs...just not sure if it's the way to go or not?

I have the six-bolt ap calipers...bet you have them too?

I've been down this path Steve and one thing I can tell you is you're into plenty of spend for the bell and rotor setup. You need two discs + a bolt kit per side, plus pads which I remember as being > £500 when I did it a few years back. This was for the 330x28s - the spacer was just a 4mm thick piece of ally.

yep £500 for the disc's and bolt kit seems about correct from memory, pads on top and good ones are not cheap.

For pads I would recommend pagid or Carbon Lorraine, EBC Red Stuff OK when new but from my experience degrade quickly with use and can be seriously lacking when cold.

EBC also seem to conduct a lot of heat into the caliper, I had big problems with boiling the brake fluid with EBC, no such problems with the Pagid RS28's I use now.

I had rotors and bells on the Cerb, when i spoke to RG they told me that rotors are available but are difficult to obtain and as guys have said above, this is a very expensive option. The discs i purchased from RG are one piece and as i mentioned.....they are a good price. To tell you the truth i haven`t particularly looked at the calipers that closely,so im not sure if they are the six-bolt type!

Thanks Al,

looks like I will park the idea of rotors that are ventilated then and stick with my set up...I will just keep an eye out for something down the line!

Glad you have a good source for discs tho....be useful
as for the calipers on 450's this is what I mean by a six bolt caliper..

Mad Jon's car has these, as does, Howard, Steve Thomsit (surry ro)..plus a couple of others...I like them...have four of them three are good...
