So iv changed the cams and set the valve clearances, all good, but it still sounds like a dog, how noisy should an ajp be? Am I been paranoid or should it sound this way?

If you have changed the clatter cams for the clatter cams, then yes.....it should still sound like a box with spanners (engine cold). Does it stil pop and bang?

It still pops and bangs I'm concerned the noise may be little end related though? It doesn't sound nice !

Must just be me, maybe have to the knob on the dash clockwise a bit, I'm used to working with dirty old cummins and even they don't sound that nasty

If it goes quiet when it is cold then you need to worry (or at least check your valve clearances)! It should sound like a half full tool chest being kicked down stairs when it starts up and gradually quieten down when it is warm.

It concerns me the noise isn't tappet related .. Maybe I should video it n put it on YouTube for a 2nd opinion?

I'm not sure whether mine has clatter cams (mid 97?) but it sounds pretty clattery on cold start. It soon quietens down once the engine reaches operating temperature. Apparently a noisy engine on start up is good for the reason that the valve clearances are set correctly.

From cold it should sound broken lol, when up to temp it does quieten down a lot.
