the cable is a standard one that you can get from any pc world or maplins etc.
Dont be fooled by some people that say there are resistors in the genuine one its rubbish mine works fine 4.99 from maplins. Oh and make sure its long enough to get the laptop somewhere you can read it whilst your head is planted under the bonnet

Yep there are resistors in the genuine one, and I would be careful otherwise if I were you. The RS232 pinout on the ECU is def not standard. The Tx and Rx are in the right place but there is other information coming out the port like engine fans etc. If you bought an RS232 lead you take your life in your hands as to how many earths are in the lead. You don't want to be shorting 12V to earth through the port. If you don't believe me turn your ignition on and then look across the 'meant to be' passive port.
If you got the software where I think you did, the CD it came on contains a picture file which shows you the exact wiring diagram.
I'm afraid I'm pants at posting pictures but will if anyone wants to post it for me.

Found the one I was looking for - any opinions / comments on this one?

Yep thats the one. There is no connection between the other connected leads and the CPU so I doubt its a lead designed to signal its presence to the CPU.
When I first connected a standard RS232 lead to mine my engine fan came on at the same time as blowing the buffer on the RS232 port on my laptop.
However my RS232 lead had the other wires ground to earth. A LOT OF SHOP BOUGHT RS232 leads have this. You may be lucky but is it really worth it for the few pence it takes to make the suggested one?
Don't say I didn't warn you
