So, whilst fitting replacement inlet manifolds I decided to replace a leaking oil switch. Job's a goodun.
Everything back together, fire car up, checking for fuel leaks and instead find oil leaking from a crack on the rocker cover!

I think the fuel rail may be slightly misaligned in relation to the manifolds, which has put a strain on the rocker cover where the bolt goes into it, hence the crack and oil leak! DOH!

Does anyone know/think whether it would be OK to weld this up?

It isn't particularly structural apart from holding the fuel rail down and keeping the oil in, so I would say yes it could be TIGed up quite satisfactorily .

Cool. Do the rocker covers have gaskets, how are they sealed to the heads?

Sealant, I've seen another 4.2 with those stress cracks. Bit of a design feature I think.

Might be worth replacing those spacers with (heat proof) rubber ones?

As rids said, no gaskets - just a smear of oil resistant silicone.

That has been caused by overtightening the bolt, theres quite a bit of Oil pressure in there so make sure the welding is 100%.
Torque them to 15lbs/ft - no more.

There is no oil pressure there, only what is spat off the camshaft lobe as it spins. smile
