Engine crane advice

The critical point with my crane was that the hydraulic cylinder is mounted at the front of the crane so it is the first thing that hits the front of the bodywork. A side mounted cylinder would give better access. As I was lifting the body, I just left the engine in place until the body was out of the way, then there was plenty of room.
Unfortunately while I can measure the reach of my crane for you, I can't tell you what reach you need as my engine is now out (and body off).

I left the gearbox on the engine, you have to tip it at a bit of an angle to get it out, but its really not a problem. It doesn't make any difference to the reach of the crane that you need.
If you need to measure for crane reach, the balance point of the engine is about 2/3rds of the way back with the gearbox attached. It is the distance between there and the front edge of the bumper that is key. I also found that I had to jack the front of the car up for the legs of the crane to fit under the nose without hitting the fibreglass, so you want to check the height of the legs vs your ground clearance.

2/3 of the way back is certainly more than 1.3m for the crane I was looking at. Hmm. I guess it is just about centered if gearbox is taken off separately or left on? It's overkill, but Ive seen a 2 tonne crane that has the reach I reckon.

I decided to pull the engine and get a rebuild mate, hence the ACT coolant hoses and pipes still sitting on the dining table!
